the Tyrant is marginally wider than the T-Rex dude, similar shape too. I think both will be a handful to learn on.

this is what i was talking about. Dialer top, 20.5" wide, full on the front. Tyrant bottom, ~19" wide (T-rex 18.75") but narrow on the front.

Thanks for all the great info, I really appreciate it. I found someone selling a used DV8 at Sherman so I may go that route. Figure I'll beat it up anyways learning and once I figure out what I am doing I can always demo boards and determine what style I like best. Still figuring the twin tip out but I know I want I directional since I prefer that style of riding being a windsurfer. Hope to see you all on the water soon!

One thing to remember about Trex is that it is a modern planning hull design. Even though the deck is narrower compared to a traditional surfboard, its gets on the plane very early. Once the board is on the plane, it is quite easy to walk on it. You can basically have a kite drag you down wind, and take your sweet time to shuffle your feet into the new position.

I have ridden a Trex for about 10 mins at Waddell, and found that it deals with chop very well and is a fairly stable board just like my firewire vanguard. However, I didn't like the stiffness and the excessive weight of the board.

Celeritas
Aint Cheap but rides beter than Tyrant (I have both) and is good volume for those bay days where you ned to plane through some lulls.

Bought one, lost it bought another but shorter.

Expensive and hard to find used for a reason.

I'm 6' 2" 215 so like the volume

I think you'll be quite content with the DV8 G1 for learning. However if you can afford to spend a little more $$$, I'd suggest getting the 2014 NuWave on sale vs the G1 version of the DV8.

The NuWave has a rounded, less pronounced rail vs the DV8 G1's very pronounced and somewhat sharp rail which can bruise your heels if you miss a jibe. The NuWave is also lighter weight and has a Futures fin box, so getting the right fin for your weight and/or replacing a fin is less of an issue vs the DV8 G1.
The G2 version of the DV8 is almost identical to the NeWave now. It has the rounded, less pronounced rails, it's lighter weight (about =), and now is spec'ed with a Futures fin box. So for $700 you can get the same set up that's $870. Either way you go (G1 vs NuWave), good choice imo!
See ya at Sherman. :)

my first directional is very similar to the tyrant. the price was right and it came with a bag. it is a little squirrely and have not been able to land a jibe.

got an 5'6" f-one fish and it made a big difference, making jibes much easier and slower for learning. also didn't take as much wind so i could practice in calmer water.

still working on it.
