Dirtbags at the Delta...

Post by fearlu » Tue Apr 21, 2015 7:58 am

Sorry for the bad news but here's a head's-up if you are likely to land at the second island past Sherman. There has been a fire there and the beach has a lot of broken bottles. I propose that we take our sneakers and a bucket up to the island via SUP, raft, etc. and do some damage control. (Once the tides begin to cover the glass with sand, it will reappear for years to come.)

At least the water behind the island is still glassy. Could have been my imagination but it seemed like the reduced vegetation promoted cleaner wind (silver lining wishful thinkin').

Won't be around this weekend to help but thanks Dave for the heads up and damage control.

Noticed the typical early season fisherman dance this last weekend, three guys set up ready to catch some kiters at the primary launch. We'll see more. Try not to be too edgy when you're talking to them or it can generate the broken bottle response which isn't good for anybody. I know this is likely to generate the old "they have as much right to be there" and the "what the hell do they think they're doing" camps.....but it generally sorts itself out if you just engage them politely, even if sometimes it may appear they're spoiling for a fight. I told 'em the young kiters taste best.....and have plenty of fight in them. Not sure they thought it was funny but at least they didn't break any bottles or start any fires I know of.......

Thanks again for the cleanup.

That sucks. I sliced up my foot last Fourth of July in shallow water of the main beach last year. I can feel it now just thinking about it.

Doesn't help much with the glass (there is some on the sides of the trail between the lower and upper launch at 3rd too :< ) but Okespor kite booties have Kevlar in the bottom which is supposed to help with cut resistance for reefs / rocks / glass / marine life. I have the "kite high" boots, and they're a bit expensive, but pretty solid so far. I think other brands also make booties with a Kevlar layer in the soles, maybe some FCS ones or something had it IIRC.

Sadly, can't really put booties if you have boots on your board...

Snowboard bindings with booties instead of boots? ;)

I was making another feeble attempt at learning to foil this past Thursday morning. When the wind started to die for my 12M, I sort of got "trapped" on-shore over near these guys just south of the main launch. I was yelled at and I politely dropped my kite & gear, and rescue-walked back to the launch. A couple guys who seemed very nice, fishing for striped base. But.... I could not help noticing all the many tossed beer bottles. What a mess.
The fishing method is to "plunk" a weight & bait out as far a can be sent... effectively closing that area to 25' out... especially for struggling foilers :)
