Finally getting pretty good on my F4 foil. No more swimming, nailing all my surface gybes, etc. Over the weekend I wanted to foil in the ocean as opposed to in the bay here in San Diego. Couldn't get past the 3-6ft breakers with my 12m in 15 mph winds. I'd like to think I'm good at body dragging upwind with the foil - but I feel like I'm missing something.
Whats the trick to getting through big surf dragging with a foil?

Re: Getting past the surf break with foil
It's not easy, especially when wind is more directly onshore. Look for a rip or second sandbar that can help get you to deeper water faster. You just need to go out as deep as you can and wait for a lull. Could take a few minutes so be patient. One hand to make small powerstrokes to keep the kite powered when wave hits and the other hand to push the foil upwind through the waves with foil up. I use a 9 in that much wind, so you should have plenty of body dragging power.
