I use a SS bar......pull all lines so chickenloop's in full power position, put the rubber steering guards in the middle but then take all lines together and throw a few wraps around the bar until I reach the swivel for the center lines before starting to wind normally. Otherwise the stretchy bit can cause some slack which I don't like. Aloha's tip about keeping your front and back hands well separated and slack in the lines between your hands when you're walking them out is probably enough to cover most of your issues I'll bet. Makes a huge difference.
I usually keep most of my stuff in my car so only wash the lines out if there's a hose handy....it's a good idea but it's kind of like flossing regularly....everybody says they do it all the time but.....really?
Wetsuit is another question entirely, I find they last longer if you wash them after salt water immersion. I stopped peeing in my wetsuit a long time ago, even before my brother was attacked by the shark and one of the theories was that distressed marine animals will urinate....so it attracts sharks. He says he didn't pee in his wetsuit but he also claims to floss regularly.
Anyways, good idea to rinse the wetsuit even if you don't pee in it (or admit to it....sort of inverse proportionality to what people say about flossing). If anybody has a good way of keeping your booties from smelling after salt water immersion, let me know. There's some kind of god awful mold that eventually takes up residence in my booties after I've had them for awhile.......should be declared a superfund site or rated as some kind of biological weapon for al-qaeda. I had them in my backpack on a small plane a while back and felt really really bad about it....surprised I got through security screening.....
I'm sure there's some product out there for it....any suggestions? Washing doesn't seem to affect the mold and it seems to be thermophilic because hot water has no effect on it. Nasty stuff. Even worse than that video.......

Re: What's your takedown routine?
how do you store them? I peal mine off my feet so they flip inside out. then i leave them that way until the next session. the dirty side stays covered and the sweaty side airs out. solves the sand/mud problem and the stinky mold problem in one move.friggin old guy wrote: If anybody has a good way of keeping your booties from smelling after salt water immersion, let me know. Re: What's your takedown routine?
I just bought a new pair of O'Neil Psycho booties and have probably worn them 3 times. They're urine free, but man, they stink so bad I can smell them from across the garage. Seriously.
My old pair (4+ years old) smell kinda funky, but nothing like the new ones.
There must be something in the glue they use or something. I'm almost ready to return them - ick!

Kind of excessive but I originally got this to limit the stank from my snowboard boots and gloves a few years ago. Actually works well for the psycho booties and gloves too...

Re: What's your takedown routine?
I don't know if it affects the durability much, but I've been leaving my psychofreak booties in the sun the next morning / day after riding and they never really smell... I have a good 1.5 years use on them. The bootie soles have worn out more than the neoprene
The neoprene is their air neoprene (spongy stuff) I'm not sure if it dries less stanky than the standard O'Neill neoprene booties. When they finally become un-usable I'll definitely be getting a replacement pair made from the same stuff they've been great
Oh they also give you ninja skills to use out on the water

The best "Take-Down" method is to ride up fast, loop the kite around the the offending kiters lines a few times, hit the EJECT BUTTON and say;
Oh-OH.. Sorry BRAH, my bad-.....
LOL!!

Re: What's your takedown routine?
There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who admit to peeing in their wetsuit, and liars.
If you don't pee you are either:
1. Not hydrating enough
2. Kiting too short a session
This forum is clearly dominated by really smart people.....I have no clue my takedown routine....deflate, roll shit up....when I'm done w/my sesh I'm glowing with the natural high from doing what I love....and am eagerly looking forward to the cold beer that is waiting for me...the post sesh hang is critical part of the experience.
Crap wears out and stuff smells bad - that means you are using it right. Do it more.

I have found the enzymatic wetsuit material cleaners like Cat5 or Mirazyme work surprisingly well for removing offending stinkies, and the procedure is pretty easy.

Aloha:
I used to have booties with flashy red bottoms too, but became perturbed by how much my feet resembled trolling lures when dragging back to my board.....
Probably stinky booties like mine are a bigger fish attractant.....careful you don't get the mold problem or you could have a real winning combination.......

Coast barefoot all the way FOG! When you can't feel your feet that's when you know you've got too much ocean on you, your shark immunity has worn off and it's time to come in ^^
