And everybody step out of the angry mob with pitchforks....

Post by tanker223 » Wed Jul 27, 2005 5:07 pm

Im sure most kiteboarders are aware of the politics involved in this sport. As it is we are fighting hard to keep acess open. Crown Beach is worried, as well they should be, about liability and insurance to teach this sport. They dont want all of us opening up our own businesses and launching our sudent/victims all over Alameda. Boardsports and CB made an agreement because CB only wants ONE concession. That, to me, seems fair. For those of you woried about tax dollars, opening this up for everyone to teach will mean higher taxes to cover liability. Perhaps we could thank the shack for helping maintain a safe launching/landing area, and creating a political agreement with the city that keeps our sport afloat, so to speak.
In any case, this is the law as it stands right now. Has anyone asked Jeff why he continues to break it, rather than appeal it and work around it? This use of force was called in because this happens with him so often. They have tried the cop on shore, and the cop in the boat. Apparently, that didn't work. Im not saying that this whole situation is fair, but perhaps we are being too quick to assign blame and offer sympathy. If we are going to talk politics, lets understand politics.
Plus, keep in mind that it's business and capitalism that keeps this sport, and the rest of this country, going. These shops are going to fight for business. Thats how it works. Of couse we could write the above adress list saying we want to go communist. If its gonna happen, its gonna start in California, baby. I hear there is god kiting in Cuba in december.

Rebecca/Jane,

Did you ask Jeff if there was a way to work it fairly out before calling the cops?

Nice try, but im guessing rebecca and jane will stay out of this mud fight. Im not giving my name cause i dont want to find my kite slashed. You all are more interested in starting a riot and crying foul when no one is really talking about the facts, but rather just theory. Im not really sure what someones opinion of the quality of a lesson has to do with excessive force, but I fell sorry for Jane and Rebecca becauee they help all of us when we need it, and right now we seem to forget that.
I know the shack has been dealing with this issue for years, so I suspect that yes, they have tried multiple tactics. I agree with Don that this should stay on the DL. Bringing the media into it will create an image of kiteboarding creating a problem on public beaches. It is obvious that we all care about Alameda, and thats why we are so passionate about this issue, and I'm not suggesting that I know everything. But I am pointing out that this whole sport stands on shaky ground in terms of access, and I implore everyone to be sure that they know the facts and sleep well on their decisions before lashing out in words or actions. We are not exactly America's favorite pastime at the moment.
Im not sure we even know who made the phone call.... We all assume that it was the shack, and we know what truly cold-hearted people rebecca and jane have been to all of us....
I think this raises a good question; is the excessive show of force the fault of the person who made the call(whether for their own benifit or not, i don't know), the person who broke the law, the force that chose to show in excess, or the system under which they operate? Somethin to consider during your next back roll.
This concludes the second half of my essay. there will be a book for sale in the fall called "How to contemplate philosophical questions while inverted"

Q1: Does anyone know if (and if so, why) KWS was denied the oportunity to bid on the beach concession?

Q2: In addition to sailing lessons, are there others using or transiting these waters and airspace for commercial puposes? (Fishing? Tours? Public transport/ferry? Shipping? etc)
1. Excellent Question -- That would depend on EBRP definition a year.
I'm not sure they are dialed into the Julian or the Gregorian calendar.

2. Excellent question, it depends on your definition "these waters and airspace" which is at the heart of the issue. Here is my quick thought list.

If it is the high water mark
- REI has done Kayak demos perhaps they sold one.
- Yacht races and canoe races have been held from the beach there were vendors there.
- The blimp for colisium games
- Vessel Assist helping a boat that anchored in fron of the beach to long.

If it is the low water mark
- There is a retired guy that is always out at low tide gathering those little bait crawdad which he sells in town.
- Then there was a sand castle competition for - cash prize?

If it is the county line it gets crazy.
- Every flight out of Oakland Airport would be crossing through EBRP airspace.
- The Ferry to Bay Farm Island from San Francisco has no choice but to cross the county line.
- Yacht brokers demoing boats
- USCG on Patrol
- There is a tour boat that takes cremation tours out of the marina

And how does this policy affect other EBRP parks along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay, Point Isabel, Point Pinole, Bay Point, Martinez Shoreline, Oyster Bay, Miller/Knox, Carquinez Straits, Brooks Island, Hayward Shores, and parks under other jurisdictiions such as Crissy and Third?

Do you know how far this ray of light is shining?

Bruising egos/pride and causing embearisment will make potentially positive discussion/movement, impossable.

Just remember! BBQ at Sherman, no cops, no helicopters, plenty of beer.
