Time line to make this happen?

Post by jjm » Tue Jul 12, 2005 12:20 pm

So we had the initial meeting on July 10th. Can we try to set some milestones to keep on track?

I think this week, and maybe weekend should concentrate on:

1) Getting more people involved. Word of mouth, email, forum postings, etc.Make sure they know that if they have any strong feelings (even completely oppose any types of changes), they should voice their opinions here!

2) Get all of the major items discussed on Sunday posted. Rebecca was taking notes, can someone try to get these from her if she isn't able to post them immediately?

3) Figure out some milestones. Are there any already imposed, i.e. the park wants to see improvement by XXX?

4) Bureaucracy sucks, but how are we going to decide what is in and out? Majority rules? Council of OGís? Draw straws?

Seriously,
Josh has some good points.

1. We should definitely try to get more people aware of the parks concerns for public safety and our need as a community to address those concerns. Word of mouth, this forum and a mention to everyone on the beach is a good start.

2. I think most everything that Rebecca recorded has been showing up in the posts here but it would be real good to foramalize it. Rebecca? are you out there?

3. Milestones I think will be a tough one given the nature of kiters. If there is a meeting in Alameda and there is no wind on the Bay the meeting might just take place in Rio... If we have activity towards a goal and no incidents where the general public is carted out in an ambulance we should be ok. Getting the bush moved for example is contingent on the park.

4. Trust to common sense of the core individuals expressing concern. There will always be alternate views. Getting the guidelines to the point they are now, posted on this site and on the shack was a process of consensus building. There will always be those more concerned about getting back to the beach to take a dump while jumping sharks in light air then being proactive to keep the park/city/state bureacracy out of the equation. At this point simply trust the process.

As far as milestones, one is going to be a final list of new guidelines and hopefully some form of literature as Pam pointed out many times. I don't know when the end of the season will be, but guessing October? Assuming season is done Sep31, that gives us like 2 1/2 months, so we'd have to get something done before then, otherwise it is all for next year (maybe that is ok, once some core things are dealt with right away, don't know?), in which case we're not really accomplishing much?

An iteration to kiters on the beach who are not participating/not aware of what is being worked on so they don't feel decisions have been made behind closed doors without their input.

Show parks department work-in-progress to make sure it meets their expectations.

Could someone explain what the true statements/complaints from the public or a park? Is it written by Rebecca? I may have been over heard or didn't get clear statement(s). I think we are in a positive direction by a voluntary restriction to outselves for the safety of public and our own. I'd imagine implementing a new policy will probably take a while but as long as the majority or at least people who "know" the change start acting as a role model, I'm sure newbies as well as visitors will follow and if we see others not aware of the rules, then we could talk to them. I believe it shouldn't be too complicated, even though I realize not all people are willing to listen to others, unfortunately. I also think the Alameda season is almost over, so we may also consider implementing it now and get as many feedback as possible for next year to come.

yoko
that is how we got here,

not enough kiters leading,

and too meny kiters doing what they will.(not draging out, rideing too close to the beach ,
swooping over peoples heads, and most inportent not enough kiters helping out at the luanch.)
i see alot of kiters run to get on the water in a me frist attude?

the wind will be there, and if not, you missed not a thing.

take time to help others who are just learning,
after all it is a begniner beach!
then there is the show offs who just have to do stuff to make a statement
what statement, well ill leve that alone for now.
