Alameda schooling issue!

Post by windhorny » Sat Jul 23, 2011 5:18 pm

I dont know what school at the island here it is but I have seen this 3 times now and it is just plain stupid! There are 3 people and 1 kite just drifting downwind. I cant imagine a real school would do this without boat support. Two white helmets and one yellow one and a naish kite. Today was a little different as one of the students attached to the kite got pulled away from the other 2 floating people (assuming one was an instructor). Then the student on the kite, who had no idea what to do, went all the way downwind on a crowded day and looked like he was in serious panic once he hit the beach. he was grabbing the front lines, etc and people downwind. So my wife and friend went out to go body drag the instructor and other student to the student attached to a kite.

Please do tell who this is if you know and lets report them to Boardsports or the police so they can maybe prevent it.

Alameda is crazy. Went there for the first time today after having only been to 3rd. A lot of newbies with no respect for how dangerous the kite is. I know I'm a noob myself but I took a ton of lessons and made sure I wouldn't be a risk to anyone else before going out alone. I sat down on the bench and had a smoke, less than a minute later two kites are tangled in front of me. I grabbed one of the kites just before the wind was about to take it across the path and the douche got mad at me cuz I still had the cig in my hand. I shoulda just let his kite get ripped to shreds on the chain link fence.

Launching the kite especially in light air can be one of the hardest skills to learn as a new kiter. This is where a lot of things head south (or technically south/southeast lol) at Alameda. At the upper launch there has been a buffer zone created to allow the kite to bounce downwind and still stay within the launch area or end up in the water while the new kiter punches out.

Everybody has been there before and it is sort of what the upper launch is meant for--learning in as a controlled and safe environment as possible. It's cool because while that learning is taking place there, it spares it having to take place amongst experienced kiters on the slick mud flats at the upper 3rd launch on a crowded day.

In Alameda more experienced kiters will enjoy making Max's Landing home base. It's one of the friendliest beach's in the bay and we try to stay vigilant and self-police to keep bystanders as safe as possible to preserve such an amazing place to kite.

Alameda/Bay Farm bay is the most beautiful place to kite around and has some of the most constant and steady thermal winds in the bay. Bring a big kite, a big board (finless if low tide) and a good attitude and come rock out till sunset any day of the week 8)

Yeah Yuri I have seen the Trio a couple of times myself. I am still scratching my head what the hell is going on there myself. I kited by them last Sunday to check it out and it appears they have some fetish out there. Its always the guy with the purple pony tail in the harness and mission hipster and asian dork hanging on.

Those Russian guys today were a trip pretty sure the guys tespguitarist was talking about

Sorry to hear about the tangled lines at Alameda and the attitude of the errant kiter. I think everyone I see at Alameda does a pretty admirable job of keeping a weather eye out for inexperienced kiters and inspiring others to speak out if we see something questionable. I have definitely seen some scary stuff go down and I'm sorry to say that at least one time its been at my own hands. #-o .

I try to do my part to keep things safe and worry that its only a matter of time before some beach goer gets collared from the lines of a runaway kite. Praying it never happens.

Wanted to second Aloha's comment about bringing a big kite and board and the great attitude at Shell Gate. I did some Ebay shopping and got a large used kite and its changed by Alameda life. Great place to kite with the beach and friendly crew but Alameda can be a teaser when she just weakly bubbles along at 9 kts.

Not a complete newbie now,

Norman

I was there last Monday hoping to find wind after working in a nearby office but ended up shooting the breeze with Rebecca and Jane and some others instead. There was one guy down on the beach showing another how to fly a kite, and in my opinion fairly safe and responsibly, but there were definitely mixed opinions about whether they should have been doing that on the beach or not.

Anyway, I then went for a walk down to the mall and back to get some fresh air while traffic died down. Walking back I passed two gents walking a dog, and I didn't catch all of the conversation, but it sounded like they were talking about wanting to get rid of kiting there! They said something about getting close to achieving their goal before, and some sign "down there" that they wanted to take down (is there a kiting rules sign posted?), and they mentioned the shop (which led me to believe they were talking about Jane & Rebecca's), but I could not walk slow enough to eavesdrop (they were larger fellows and I think it was a German Shepherd stopping often to sniff). Sooo.... PURE speculation but it led me to believe some of the people that live there think it's a danger or an inconvenience. I know several of you readers are local so maybe you've heard neighbors speak up before - on the other hand it could be purely my imagination what I heard.

Either way I was in that area Sunday but too hung over to kite (girlfriend's birthday) and I heard it was great. Dammit!! Alameda never blows when I'm there!
