The guy who was trying to sell me on a lockbox (the "key stab" guy) showed me his, and it had a padlock-style loop on top (like the realtor boxes) and he had it hanging under the frame of his truck. A little less conspicuous than having it pasted next to your tag.

Hello The111......After talking with my brother SFPD .. he said there are boxes with an alarm on them now, and if when entering the code to the unit?? it is the wrong code, this will set off the alarm.. he did say it is still better if you keep a key with you as most cars or trucks have an alarm on them that sets the alarm when locked.

I've recently added the lock box hanging under my car thing, after considering other alt,
I share the car with my wife so the key kinda has to be available at the car, we don't want to each carry a key.

I think the alarm on the lock box is just silly

also as others pointed out, the thieves are usually interested in our wallets , cash , phones ...
and as always with thieves of that nature ( not talking about an organized car theft ring here ) the low hanging fruit is what they go after.

Another point is that the key you hide in the box does not start the car ... just a suggestion .

and this is for parking at 3rd , not some shady alley downtown San Jose ;-)

Consider the risk/counter-measure and you'll find the key in the lock box is a great idea, for parking your car at 3rd if you don't want to carry a key ...

Another advantage is , what if you're sharing a ride to the beach , you'd have to wait for the dude with key to get the cold ones ;-))

I hitched a ride from jr a couple of times , I always had a beer in my hand before him

Hello serge,

I just got back from the home owners meeting in the building here and one thing on the adjenda was to remove about 5 lock boxes that were never removed by there realtors ..I asked if I could have the job of removing them and got the votes...I will make a video clip of my findings.. I will first try a scanner my bro..can borrow from his precinct .. then I will try to enter a common code# this is the code from the manufacturer before you set your own. If this does not work I will use a bolt cutter and let you all know how it go's??? I hope I can get them off the gate or I will have to pay a professional to remove them 8-[ anyway thanks for your input serge.. I can see now there is more to these boxes then meets the eye.

Just saw a similar sign the other day. Who knows, maybe it would deter thieves at 3rd....
