After forgetting to take my key and getting locked out in HMB, I set up some lock boxes. Bought the lock boxes at Home Depot.

If your key has a chip on it you can buy a (zip-lock bag) it will still fit in your key pocket

you can also often times just get a copy of your key made at any hardware store. it won't start the car, but it will usually open the door.

i keep mine permanently attached to my harness.

Hello jrg,

That is called a (Realtors Key Box) They do work??.. but you are telling them you have valuables enough to put a lock box on your car.. this is a calling card for the thieves and now your car or truck is a target. This is why they put a key pocket on your wetsuit, shorts, vest. harness , this was a demand from surfers to the manufactures in the early 70's and ever since then they have been working this pocket to the outer leg for easy access.

They do work??..
Works for me - my car was at 3rd that day.
but you are telling them you have valuables enough to put a lock box on your car..
Same could be said of any alarm system. I believe they will pick the easiest target.

The key in the wetsuit works great till the day you forget....

I have had one for 13 years and never had my car broken into at 3rd.

Sunny,

In my defense.. I did say they work.... but I did bust one of the biggest car theft rings in Santa Cruz County.. I received a accomodation for the conviction of the gang, and I'm proud of the this as my wife and I spent 2yrs of our lives and alot lot of research on car thieves to get the bastards.

I can tell you first hand that you are one lucky man..as alot of homes, cars,storage-sheds,bikes. are burgularized do to the older lock boxes.. I agree with you the boxes are alot better then they used to be? but this will not stop a thief?.. it just tells them in this box is the key to my valuables, when they bust these guys there first line of defence is the key was right there for the taking.. and a cooler in there means a cold one to go with it..put your key in your key pocket and the only way into your car or truck is to break into it.. and if you have an alarm it will send them running.. if you tell your insurance company you had a key in a lock box on your car?? they will open a claim but trust me.. you will lose your case unless you can prove to them that it was the only option to secure your keys or you reported it on your policy.

...when they bust these guys there first line of defence is the key was right there for the taking...
Some courtroom in San Mateo Superior Court: "But judge, the generous owner left the key right there for me. So technically I didn't steal that stuff, he effectively gave it all to me."

Reminds me of the story of when Nat went up to the Kitopia area at Sherman where he teaches and found some guy trying to make off with the lawn mower Nat stashed there to knock down the weeds. Dude trying to steal the lawn mower: "Oh, sorry.. I didn't know it was yours." Nat: "Well you sure as hell knew it wasn't yours!"

Btw- was anybody able to kite at third yesterday (Saturday)? I was going to head over there and take my chances but then decided it was too iffy and rode my bike up Mt. Diablo and watched the sunset from the top instead. Looks like the wind did finally come up late at 3rd. Hope I didn't make the wrong call.

Woudn't be easier to break the window than the lockbox?
