Re: sherman traffic
Let me try to clarify the ROW rules behind the 2nd island at Sherman. Technically, starboard tack has right of way there. There is nothing special about that island that changes the standard ROW rules. So, if you're riding back there on starboard tack and insist on retaining your ROW, by all means go for it. If there is a collision between you and a rider on port tack who is following the local convention, then you would most likely prevail in a legal battle if it comes to that.
So, what I mean by by convention, port tack has right of way behind the island is that a long time ago many of us who kite back there often came to the realization that port tack is highly favored over starboard tack there in order to take the most advantage of the prevailing conditions. And that in order to fully realize this advantage, starboard riders should relinquish their ROW. Doing so is completely voluntary - it is not mandatory, and no one will give you any grief (or at least shouldn't) if you insist on starboard ROW. It simply makes sense there, in the interest of the majority, to always give ROW to port riders.
I'm sure there are some riders out there who prefer to throw their tricks behind the island on starboard tack - in fact, I do almost all of my unhooked stuff on starboard, and therefore only do that stuff there when I'm not going to interfere with anyone on port - and will be against this convention , but it seems to work out best if we all follow it.
So to summarize: starboard tack does indeed have ROW behind the 2nd island. You may insist on maintaining your ROW when you are on starboard if you wish. However, to maximize the enjoyment of that special place by the majority, please consider relinquishing your starboard ROW to port riders. Thank you for your cooperation. :)
I knew there were a lot of people who weren't aware of the convention there. I guess with so many new riders all the time, it bears repeating once in a while.

that means left or right? I forget-
with my back to the water and my face to the kite,
or is it their left or right???
does this also apply when your passing the other rider, you know like when your about to run them over?

Re: sherman traffic
Another option to ROW to consider :ugeek:
Fighter kites are kites used for the sport of kite fighting. Traditionally an abrasive line is used to cut down other kites.
Kite fighting is done in many countries, but is particularly associated with Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, and Korea.
And more recently behind second Island @ Sherman :violence-duel:

Re: sherman traffic
what a fun thread....It is pretty easy to see, after a couple rotations, who likes to throw what on what tack...I know exactly where Ollie is going to throw a double forward with a kite loop, and pretty much how much room he is going to take up downwind...it will always be on starboard, past the middle of the island....on port he is going to send it, or do a straight up kite loop....btw...those were sizable suckers on Sunday...but the same goes for pretty much all of us...my kids are always going to try something unhooked on port past the middle of the island. If some of you don't know, you do not want to do a sketch move in the middle, as it can be tough to relaunch right behind the island if you are close.
So, watch, learn, and then fit in the groove.....Can we agree on one thing, however? It is probably not the best form to mow the lawn, taking multiple passes, on a crowded day....

Damn Bob, you got it right, nothing gets by you! Sunday was good for sure, thanks! I'll have to throw in some red herrings to 'trick' you. Haha... :Pwhitecap wrote:.I know exactly where Ollie is going to throw a double forward with a kite loop, and pretty much how much room he is going to take up downwind...it will always be on starboard, past the middle of the island....on port he is going to send it, or do a straight up kite loop....btw...those were sizable suckers on Sunday...
Oh, for sure, if you're in the rotation at the second island, you're pretty much required to go big, you can mow the lawn anywhere! :mrgreen:So, watch, learn, and then fit in the groove.....Can we agree on one thing, however?
