the launch at sherman, everyone launches on a PORT tack. (left hand forward) so wouldn't right of way say PORT tackers launching from sherman have right of way???

as for the island, either tack could be coming toward the beach as it's directly upwind. I can reach the beach on starboard or port. and plus, we're not in the ocean with crashing waves that need to be avoided..

and finally, if you followed rule #4 at waddell, I think you'd get shot...

i still don't get it....help! If i'm to explain this rule to new folks, I need to believe it myself...

Folks, everyone take a deep breath....if you ride @ Sherman with any consistency, and get to know some of the folks who ride, you know when they are about to throw down, what they like to do, on what tack....not that complicated to learn patterns.

Unless you want kite on your head/in your lines, give em some space, and smile.

amen! The Good Reverend Z likes to carve giant turns in the butter, I like to make sure i steer clear of the giant wall of spray that his surfboard makes....otherwise I might get wet.

I think standard right of way rules apply. If I see somebody coming down the high side of the lane on port tack in the lee of the island, I just don't go in and try another rotation.

I don't think ROW has anything to do with beach reference, but rather starboard needs to yield to port if port tack is encumbered by limited manuevarabilty.

As far as right of way out of the Sherman launch, even though you're on port tack you do have limited manueverability so standard rules would seem to apply. Kind of what Z's saying about patterns, most folks learn not to force starboard ROW at that point and force launchers into the bushes or the boat.

Like Adam says, try to claim starboard ROW at any wave spot and see what happens. There was some instructor in southern california posting in Ikite that was attempting to claim the outbound kiter at wave spots had right of way but that's just nutty.

Or we could forget all the rules and just be courteous. Like Zev already said, I think most people know what others do and where they do it while new people are very easy to spot. There are few grumpy riders that will try to kill your stoke and pinch you off just because the "rules" are on their side. Who cares, give these guys a smile, let them go by and keep doing your thing.

The only rule I follow while riding is USE COMMON SENSE.
If I'm riding up wind I fly my kite high, if I'm below the line of an opposing rider I keep my kite low... If I'm approaching another rider and they look shaky I try to avoid riding to close for their comfort....

that said: I can pass within 10' of another rider with no problem. I actually like to ride around lots of riders, keeps the action coming.

You guys talking about crowds make me laugh, I rode for hours all by myself this weekend... I must have hit the kicker 100X or more-

Well yeah it's all muddled and standard ROW differs from wave ROW, but main thing to go with the flow, be cool and have fun. More often than not I'm happy to just veer downwind and go around rather get in a pinching match. You can always tell when you see the guy bearing toward you, powering up and edging harder, it's clear what his intent is, so he can have it if he wants it that bad. You get more smiles yielding more anyway and a better vibe...
