Erin, you should get a plain white kite and write "smile you are on camera" on it.

Very good thread Paul and i agree with you the POV cam isn't that great and there are a zillion crappy vids on Youtube.. some of mine maybe included.
Even when i was filming the helmet cam one under the bridge i was trying to keep my head still and "track" other riders it still came out really choppy but the experience make it good enough to watch a little of it without getting dizzy.

Thanks nice for the comments on the video and i got a few more coming soon.

Yeah i need to go HD video but i think im going to switch my focus this season to photography

here is a timelapse of GGB and Alcatraz out my window from a few days ago.
Enjoy

I should have added as a PS that I basically already had this conversation with Erin before posting and was not referring to the line-camera videos. Plus, when he is shooting other kiters using the GoPro, he is thinking like the photographer that he is. Also he knows how to edit his footage, unlike most of the people who post their stuff on Utube .

It was that (unusual for them) crappy Caution video on Ikite that sparked this post, BTW.

I'm a fan of the camrig it holds a camera on the center strut which gives you a good video of yourself

Agree...most POV vids suck - but there are a few out there that get the video setup right and then smooth it out in post. I think I saw one of those recently on here - that day in the life movie. I'll see if I can find it.

Ok, it's YEAR in the life - not "day", but anyway - it isn't all POV cam, but the POV shots in here are smooth, with interesting riding, not at all shaky-cam. When you see POV cams used this way, you can see the potential. But I agree most are unwatchable. (Check the other vids these guys have done on vimeo, some are only POV -- one of the POV vids won some kite video contest last year.)

POV done by 99.9% of people is boring, I agree. When it's done by pro athletes showing things that are pushing their respective sports then I think it's great. It gives you a perspective on shit that is way above your level. It's the same with any video really; it's only interesting if it's someone going off and pushing it, or video of a place you're interested in.

eag,
I'm not trying to be a hater, but the video you posted is exactly what I was talking about. I want to see that line from a camera in the helicopter, not from a helmet cam. All I see (well mostly all you see is the snow/water drops on the lens, actually), but apart from that all you see are Sage's skis in the snow. The run looks flat and boring (which it obviously isn't) and there is zero perspective so you can't see how big his airs are (I assume he is getting air several times during that run).

It blows. They had a helicopter out there, put a real photographer in the helicopter and shoot some good, clear. droplet-free footage that shows us what is really going on.

Cool vid regardless. I like that a lot of different brand riders are in it.
