I know I will have to work a little harder but you have to have a kite, board, harness, and wetsuit bare minimum to kite in the bay area I realy don't want to wait till next year to save the money and get the best beginer gear I would rather be out on the water failing (when it is safe of course) then watching you guys have all the fun. oh yeah I forgot about the cost of the lessons too buy the time I have gotten everything I will have spent close to $1500 (I had to buy a new wetsuit it's kinda like buying used underwear to me) and I paid for a package lesson deal to get the best rate I appreciate the input guys and I look forward to meeting some of you in person possibly I will be the guy who is out there not giving up looking lika a fool at times!!!
I understand that you don't have money to buy nice bow kite, but you could of bought better kite than that for less money. Talk to me before you buy anymore gear.

Dude I have a 10m and 14m 06 vegas that I will sell you for $350 each. both kites are in perfect shape and come with the lines and bars also in good shape. $700 for a complete quiver of the best C kites ever made. They are really the most stable kites ever.

Let me know.....

Usually C-kites are only flown either by old-school pros, or total beginners having no idea what they bought.

By all standards, $270 for a 04 Cabrinha nitro 12m (even brand new) - that's a rip off. You'd be much better off with a cheap trashed extensively-repaired bow than with any brand new C-kite.

Another advantage of learning on the bow kites are the extended windrange and easy relaunch which both are very important when learning. These allows you have more time in the water riding rather than getting OPed and relaunching. I've seen so many kiters that learn on bows, and after the end of season, they are already riding and maybe staying upwind. I can't say the same for folks on Cs.

I think most people don't realize that the amount of time it takes to learn on really old gear or bad gear is way more expensive than buying the right gear (new or used).

My advice to beginners is ask experience riders, not just your instructor on what gears to get.

And for you Dirtydbz, just take the hit on that kite and get a used bow kite. There's plenty used ones under $500 and you'll enjoy this sport.
I have flown the nitro, it's fast, boosty and not a of range and DEFINITELY not for people to learn on.

Wow, that's pretty funny.

I don't agree with you at all here. Sayaka was going upwind after the 4th time in the water on 05 Windwing Rage2 and after that switched to an 06 7m Vegas. We recently got the 07 Rebels and she says they suck because they are slow as hell. This is coming from someone that has been kiting one season and is not even an old-school pro.

Dude, Sayaka is an exception. She would have got good on anything because she is aggressive and have no fear. But still, she might have learned even faster on the bow.

dirtydz, first of all, very welcome to the sport!

ramsey's offer (sell nitro, buy his waroo for whatever you get) seems like a great option for you. take it! yes, you can learn on an old kite (most of us did) but it will most likely hurt more and take longer.

oh, and BIG credit for taking lessons! being an alameda local i've seen it all ... big kite, no clue ... prompt visit inland towards the trees or even the street ...

That may very well be true and maybe I just haven't seen this first hand but if you can't go upwind after the first month then I don't think any kite will be able to help in any significant way.
