Surf & study?

Post by zoharl » Sun Sep 16, 2007 7:10 pm

Hi,

I'm planning to study in the U.S. and I hoped you could help me with some details.

I'm lookin for a good life, good surfing conditions with a good university, and California seems the best combination.

Looking for a warm climate, I considered San-Diego, but I've been told the wind there is lousy. Satisfied with 2 days of 15 knots a week, do you know if San-Diego is that bad? Do I really have to go that north (colder) to San-Francisco to get a decent wind?

- In the bay area, can I surf almost anywhere or are the spots concentrated in specific areas?

- How really cold is the weather? the water?
(all pictures seem with fog and wetsuits..).

Another problem with SF is the universities. Only Stanford and Berkeley seems to deal in my area, and leaving aside the challange of getting accepted there, would they leave me any time to surf at all?!

Could you advice me on another place in the U.S.?

Whatever you could tell me, would be appreciated.

Check out UC Santa Barbara - good waves, thinner wetsuits, nice weather...good wind...
Gabe Brown
sometimes Gary Bronson...

Wind and waves usaully take a backseat to all of the parties, drugs and alcohol, and slutty chicks (hot slutty chicks) roaming around UCSB. The surf can be epic a couple days out of the winter but for kiting you need to drive..... NorCal can offer much more consistent but colder conditions..

In terms of wind, LA is similar to Tel-Aviv, but Bay Area is like Eilat.

You sure know your stuff..

I hate surfing in TA. It's my home spot, half a kilometer from home by bicycles, but it's polluted like a third world country, and lousy wind. Luckily we have Eilat and Kineret.

Add a warm weather to the bay and it's perfect.

About SB, the kiteforum.com suggests the wind over there dwindled over the years, and unfortunately UCSB doesn't deal in my area of research.

What is your area of study by the way. If you want balls out surfing, good weather, and good kiteboarding sessions, go to UH (University of Hawaii).

Better recommendation is pick the schools that you want to go to, and then maybe check out ikitesurf.com since that site covers a lot of spots. Some of the posters there are nasty though, so watch out.

Computer Science my third.

Hawaii was my first search..

I guess I'll stick with Cal. I narrowed down the schools to:

Berkeley, Standord, UCSD, UCLA, UC Irvine.
