If these guys would try a little harder they could make the Darwin awards.

That's my old kite!!!

And that's the pair of kooks I sold it to!!!

Here are a few facts for ya'll. Don't blame the kite, it's 90% rider, same as with today's gear. The most important piece of equipment is your brain.

1. The kite is a Peter Lynn ARC 840. It's circa 2001, not much depower, about as much as an AR5. We sure have come a long ways in kite design!

2. I used it in 15-25mph winds. Any more than that and you'll be moonwalking, unless you're Fearlu.

3. Straight downwind, halfway inflated was how they initially taught you to launch it. And yes, in high winds, get ready for a rodeo drag. You esentially reef in the rears to stall the kite so it doesn't surge to the edge if the window.
Nowadays, you can launch that beast on the side, much closer to the window's edge, but not as close as LEIs. It's a much tamer launch that way.

4. Those kooks should hold the bar in the middle, not at the ends, where spastic jerks of their arms make that kite seem like a wild animal. Ironically he would have done better if he just let go. The kite would have just drifted to zenith, then lofted him.

5. Personally, I think it was one of the best kites to learn on at the time. It never luffed, you could self launch and land it. It was super stable and it went up wind well. You could beat it into the ground and not pop it. Actually jumped pretty well too. A man's gotta know his limitations and not take it out in too much wind. Launching was always dicey though...

6. As for the rest of it, I still see people wearing board leashes. In fact, I helped 2 of them clip them on this weekend.

7. Good thing he had an anchor that didn't let go...

it's hot launch or nothing on those things. Adds an element of mystery to the launching process....there's just not enough suspense in kiteboarding anymore.
