The only time I've really had a scare jumping was on my small kite when I went huge on a gust and then dropped like a rock on a lull  . . . smacked my knee on the board in a panic landing and got a nice bruise . . . .

I think that is mis-leading statement because I don't think they will in the air 22 seconds above the elevation they jump from. They tend to float down the slope.
Sonny,
Actually, I've seen both . . . the ones of guys just jumping off the top of a big bowl down to the bottom and ones of people hovering/rising and generally gliding around due to upwards lift--the same force propelling Jessie last weekend.
I'm personally a little worried about the hype of this "world record" because (inevitably) people are now going to try and beat it by finding locations with updrafts. A recipe for casualties if ever I saw one.
BTW, there has been an extensive discussion about the physics behind this on Kiteforum:

Yeah, I've already heard a bunch of the pros at the event plan to move to SF to dedicate themselves to breaking the hangtime record. They don't think it can be done anywhere but Crissy...who woulda thunk it!?!?
Setting a world record is always going to produce more attempts. Didn't someone die trying to break the hot dog eating world record last year?

So why is it that crissy is the place? Is there some kind of thermal uplift?
I still have never kited there.

Suckers,
The wind on the inside of Crissy is as predictable as when there will be 15+ foot waves on the outside of Ft. Point with 22 mph of wind.
Also I don't think Pro kiter paid and SF cost of living mix.

I remember Jeff Ruoss telling me about a spot in Costa Rica where the conditions were such that you could get incredible hang time as well. I find it hard to believe that the conditions at Chrissy are hard to find elsewhere.

Here's another video of the jump:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=cn5gF0RNugA& ... ed&search=
In the Fonas video, you can clearly see gust texture on the water right where Jesse is jumping.
Also note at 25 seconds, the two other kites in the back ground can be clearly seen moving up, and to the right, *up and to the right*. As Jesse's kite comes into view at 28 seconds it is clearly moving down and to the left -- apparently violating the laws of physics. The only conclusion is that there were *TWO WIND GUSTS* -- one that hit Jesse, and the one from the vicinity of the other kites in the background. This will become clear when the video from the small grassy knoll behind the judging tower is posted.

I think GB was joking about all the pro kiters moving to SF to kite at Chrissy.
I was out there kiting on the inside that day, and the gusts and lulls were completely unpredictable, no rythym to them like there sometimes is in some places. Any time you jumped out there you were as likely to get dropped out of the sky as you were to get lofted. Jesse was riding the wind in a pretty sick way -- he was confident that he could offset any of the gnarly lulls by looping his kite. I don't think it was an accident that he did the whole thing pretty close to the water.
IMHO, doing that trick that day was probably safer than going huge without looping.
