Why wind at Waddell and not further north?

Post by Bulldog » Fri Mar 09, 2007 6:20 pm

Z or other weather gurus:

It's been blowing at Waddell and points further south for two days straight but not any further north. Why?

And more importantly, is it going to stay in the same pattern for the weekend? The forecast for SF area is zero wind all weekend.

Should I plan to drive 3 hours to Santa Cruz on Sunday, or is the 2 1/2 hr. trip to the Sierras a safer bet even though the snow is melting?

It's supposed to be 80 degrees on Sunday -- it might even be fun to get wet for once.

Sat

Sat Night

Sun
N winds 15 to 25 kt. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. NW swell 6 to 8 ft.
Sun Night
NW winds 10 to 20 kt. Wind waves 2 to 4 ft. NW swell 5 to 7 ft.
Mon

Not sure I understand the bit about wind needing a place to go. Having lived in the moutnains for 5 years I now know about such things as upslope and downslope winds.

Around 3pm the heat in the valley would race up the mountains and we'd feel it in Quincy (pretty damn protected all around by mountains. ANd then again around 6am or whenever the sun raised it's sleepy head, the wind would pick up again and get much colder.

Not sure how this helps us kiters but that's what I learned about wind in the mountains.

Waddell was just perfect today for me. Small waves, perfect for those >20ft lofty jumps. Wind was super steady and I was nicely powered on my 12m vegas the entire time. Definitely doing it again tomorrow and sunday.

On the way there I was worried because there was absolutely no sign of wind the entire way there but as soon as I hit the creek we had whitecaps and guys on 7s :)

it's the promised land...............and god wants it to be good ;-)
and cause of global warming........

It's actually caused by two cool factors: the bend in the state, and the fact that monterey warms up and sucks some ocean air that direction.....the cliffs of the coast help as well.....a few cool micro elements making it rock......

Get some, Z.
