This thread began with a serious comment/suggest..which I agree. However, I am familiar with kite schools on each side of the Bay which use wave runners and there is a land component to the water lessons...about 3 hrs, which includes more than flying a 2m trainer; seen students launch and land 6,8,10m kites?
This thread then deteriorates, as usual...so I'll join in. LMG...you should be very familiar with Darwin as I understand you have been nominated for his award on numerous occasions.

bottom line is EVERY school I know of does a ground lesson of SOME duration and YES some students STILL didnt get it, some I'm afraid-NEVER will.
I've had so many "little talks" with people that UNDERSTOOD nothing about kiting that said they had just completed a lesson package and got all there gear it makes me sick!
So what to do, WHAT to do??
JUST PART of "my" kite schools "oversite proposal" was a an exit exam- pass or fail.. if a student fails they need more lessons before getting a cert of some sort to purchase equipment or ride off known kiting beaches.. schools sending out bad students would get overlooked at best or put out of business at worst , schools with good results get lots of free advertizing and referals.. THE GOAL BEING: EVERY SCHOOL TEACHES THE SAME COMPLETE PROGRAM so we can get better equiped newbies. THAT simple enough FOR YA??
OK it would be hard to impliment, some may even say impossable but I think its still a good idea. Mark my words, "everybody will be a willing card member someday or kiting will be broadly banned in Cali".
OOh! I almost forgot, you third ave guys (and girls) get ready for lots of extra newbies next year, Alameda kiters are going to loose 2/3 of their beach and/or risk getting ticketed for violations. Parks legal dept are just putting the finshing touches on THEIR plan and it will go into effect starting next season.
That came straight to me (face to face) from the mouth of parks supper Anne Rockwell a just few days ago...(several people were there to witness if you'd like to call me a lier too),
Greg Boyington aka LMG, A-hole, Chicken Little, retard, etc-etc...
BTW: No the sky isnt falling, just your world getting a little smaller.

Lessons are full of important details that change as often as wind conditions. Some people are not real good with details and some are not good with change.
Eventually the newbie must go to beach and try on their own, watch out these people, help em out gently, rinse and repeat. They will eventually learn and usually have fun in the process.

Limm, please tell more about Anne's plan. Will i not be able to kite in front of my place anymore? Not to sound selfish but that would suck! Or is it just a walking kite issue? I heard something about signs being made a while back and still nothing.
As I know there are some diehard "thread nazis" on here that are going to tell me to start a new thread, I will end this here.

What are the new rules for Alameda going to be?? and will it be possible to have a designated landing area (mc donalds) for the rookies? Instead of just anywhere along the mile of beach. lol and a golf cart to take em back to the shack?

Shuttles available upwind from Pittsburg and Sherman all summer. Come see what kiting west has to offer.

The complaints have continued...
The parks solution is to restrict kiting to the existing launch zone and about 100' further up (not past the trees) and total ban on kiting is supposed to happen south of the next bathrooms, so that means about 2/3eds of the beach will be closed to kiting. Funny thing is the only area well have left is the area they recieve the most complaints about, isnt that funny?? I believe that ticketing those walking back up with kite flying will be there solution to this most notorous corner (biggest problem area). But I will say that part is just my best guess, it was not told to me. When this is really going to suck for most kiters is during the strong south winds, (we will not be able to ride very far south before having to turn around).
I believe kiters will begin being ticketed for boundry issues and a few additionl rules come next spring/summer.
Sorry I cant tell you more, it was a short conversation and frankly I dont really care anymore (and I told her so, to her face, at that time).
Good luck Alameda kiters,
