Is there no justice?

Just rallying the troops for a big shout out to the Rev. Z, who sacrificed his teeth to the cause of riding blind -- on the day after his BIRTHDAY.

Z, I wish you a speedy recovery and I hope it is not as bad as it sounds.

That guy looked like he was in some serious pain. Bummer. I remember JStJ used to wear a hockey helmet with a face guard...

Breath the nitrous oxide very deeply this morning my friend!

Charging hard as usual, jumped to blind, hit some chop (blind=unforseen), board popped up and the rail cracked him across his upper lip, breaking off three (I think) teeth. Exposed nerves, badly crushed flesh and overall a very bad deal for the man. He's a tough boy though, and hung out long enough after the ER visit so his wife could still kite prior to inevitable dental surgery (presumably today?) He's had his share this year, that's for sure.

I'd recommend "taking it a bit easy" if I thought he would pay any heed!

wow, I hope for his quick recovery. This is something that completely freaks me out, I do so much stupid shit out there, maybe I should start wearing a hockey helmet with a face guard...no joke.

We should start wearing those inflatable sumo outfits on the water.

Yeah, I'm trying to visualize ANY guy asking his wife, after she's just got her teeth knocked out by her board, "Honey, could you take another Advil so I can get one more session in ?"

quick recovery

Post by zgur » Tue Aug 01, 2006 9:09 am

Guys,

Thanks for the positive words, much appreciated.

I posted in Scotty's thread above, but basically, I just got too agressive in pushing my envelope....was having an epic Sun morning session nailing a bunch of transitions that I have not nailed in the past:confidence was up and I was stoked.

I decided to go for a railey/blind surface pass combo. Went into the raley w/a bit too much speed....went to blind, landed it....as I reached to pass the bar behind the back, I hit a peice of chop...when riding blind, your face is close to water and board......the chop I hit, hit me back, and I lost control. The board bounced up the rail hit me in the upper lip. Hard. Heard a crack. Saw lots of stars.

I was so pissed when I spit out 3 teeth and a bunch of blood.....shit, not again.....I was having such a fun sesh......tried to relauch my kite to at least finish on a good note......it was snagged on one of those orange bouy's ->I could not relaunch.....had to swim in and call it a day....

The damage:
8 stiches to upper lip on the inside
Swollen lip looks really freaky right now
1 dentist visit where they had to cut out nerves so that I can breathe without pain.
A few more Dental Surgery visits once the swelling goes down so they can put in the replacement teeth (4).

Lessons learned:
* When going for new moves, don't go full speed....you don't know what can happen and need to leave room for error.
* At SI, either do all moves inside orange bouy, or way outside (I will do them wayyy outside).
* Moves that include blind riding place your face close to board and water - use caution and do it where water is relatively flat.
* Make sure your footstraps are tight.

Thank you to all my friends who provided support on the water, the beach and as I was pulling it together at my trailer. I am very lucky to have such a great community of friends who care.

Dave - your advice is heard and absorbed, I will mellow out a bit on how hard I push that envelope....I am 40 after all (insert toothless smile)

Get some, Z.
