Not a bad roundtrip airfare price at all really considering the distance. SFO to Maui is probably $400, so $200 more gets you to Japan. But how much is lodging and food? If I take 3rd in the competition maybe I could buy myself dinner?

Lodging will be around $30-40 per person.Japanese Lodging system is not per room.
Food pricing is almost same as SF.
You are not going to Tokyo. One cup of coffee won't be $9.Regularly $2.But they serve you with middle size cup which is in between Italian cup to American mag cup.

Is that lodging price for one of the sleeping tubes stacked into the wall?
A big tatami room with 20 people?
