Living the dream

Post by zgur » Sat Mar 04, 2006 6:57 pm

In the last 48 hours I have experienced some of the best that cali outdoors has to offer.....

Fri - I hooked up with Gabe and we played on the coast. It was such a bonus session, we almost got skunked and rained. Instead, I got to cherry pick one of the best waves in kitesurfing, as only 3 others kiters were out. I then grabbed a kind burrito with Gabe while reliving the awesome sesh.

I then drove a few hours to Tahoe.

Sat - epic bluebird powder day at my home mountain, Alpine. The snow was deep and plenty of face shots. Funny enough, the face shots with frozen or melted water, was about the same temperature.

Life is good.

...and then kids came in our lives .....

I still recall wakeboarding in the morning, kiting in the afternoon and Tahoe next day - those were the days!!! Hold on - still are...

Yesterday I was shaking just pumping my kite as I looked on to miles of empty surf. Dumping barrels at Beach Squares, long waves at the Rack, grinders at Warm Waters. A three mile walk talking kitesurfing to this gushing young girl... I felt like a little boy all over again!
What a great day, kiting in waves rules!!! Kiting waves at home- priceless...

was today the best day of your life??

Post by zgur » Thu Mar 09, 2006 9:19 pm

Was today the best day of your life??? If not, why not???

After my awesome wave + pow days, I was driving home w/my daughter. 80 was clogged w/sunday afternoon drivers who were scared of a few snowflakes, so we took a shortcut - old highway 40. We are driving and having a blast listening to music. Life just does not get better then this. The road is snowy but not too bad. I'm going to Vegas this week and next weekend Johanna has a big race.

I take a turn a bit too fast and slide into a snow bank. No big. We get out. A car stops to ask if we are ok. We say yes. As I get done saying this, the stopped car gets hit from behind by a car which could not stop. Scary so close to you, the sound of crunching metal. Passengers get out to see damage. We start walking to the other snowbank for safety, and coming up at us, sideways and very fast is a big red ford expedition. People are screaming "watch out"....The car is spining and coming right at us. Like in a bad dream - slow motion, but very real.

Since it's spinning, I wait to see where it's going to hit. Johanna is screaming. At the last moment, I push johanna out of the way and get slammed by the expeditiion. I am wrapped around the bumper and get slammed into the parked car. I fall to the ground not feeling my legs or able to breathe. The crunchiing sound sounded really bad: glass, metal and my bones??

To make things worse as I lay there wondering how many bones I broke and what organs are smashed, another pickup is coming at me down the snowy road. I try to get up and my legs don't work....this is it I think to myself.....I make a last attemp to crawl away and the car misses me by inches.

The next thing I know is Sugar bowl partollers cutting off my pants to see what is broken. One of the people on site is saying "he got hit really bad". I can't talk or breathe.....really cold, starting to faint.."sir what is your name?" I can't answer......freaking out about missing wave/powder season - shit, I just got new kites.....I'm going to miss Johanna's race this weekend.....shit....why now?....

ride to the hospital was a blurr....I wake up the next day, very sedated in Tahoe Forrest Hospital. I can't belive this is hapenning to me....

The miracle - no broken bones. All organs ok. Lot's of bruising. Lot's of nightmares. Everything hurts. Johanna is 100% ok, physically and in the head. All things considered, I am the luckiest person in the world...does not feel that way when I try to get up from bed, but that will pass....

So if today was not the best day of your life - c'mon, change things, as it may be your last day. Make each day as good as you can.

Glad to be here to see my kids smile and smell my wifes hair.

I hope to see you on the water soon.

Later, Z.

Thank goodness your child is safe and sound. You will be back up and running soon. In the time now -hang out with the wife and go out get some girl scout cookies. Stock up on some calories before you get going again :) Your perspective is inspiring.

I was sitting on a plane in Pheonix on my way back home from Baja, on the phone with my wife who had to stay in CA for work. I am listening to the pilot announce that all cell phones must now be turned off for the duration of the flight. As I am saying goodbye, see you soon, I hear her screaming at the top of her lungs, she has been hit by another car. The phone goes dead, the plane starts moving.

For two hours I wondered if she was alive, if she was in a hospital somewhere, or what.

She was hit by a drunk driver blowing a stop sign. She walked away; airbags work. New car demoed, but who cares?

Z, you are a hero to your daughter. Your story scared the crap out of me. Get well soon -- you've got a few months before the real fun starts out in the Delta.

Holy shit man thats fucked up, talk about suspense. I'm glad your wife is okay, and sorry you had to go through that whole ordeal.

Zeev, also holyshit, thank god you are okay man. You didnt break anything , both physically and mentally, awesome. You should be up and riding very very soon. The ocean will be quiet until your return..
