Re: New Surfboard?
Hi guys,
Got the opportunity to buy 5'10'' Al Merrick Flyer for 200$, looks to be tuflite build of.
Specs seems to be close enough from a TDZ 6.0 (Ian Alldredge type).
I am intermediate level, and found my FOne Signature 5'8'' (5'8'' x 17'' 3/4 x 2') too small for strapless riding, but my actual surfboard way too big (big fish 6'4x21x2-7/8''), even if i like it in light wind.
Any opinion of this board ?
Thx

Re: New Surfboard?
Can people provide guidance on thruster and quad sizing with and without straps for riding in the ocean and non-ocean around SF? I ride a 6'1" thruster with straps. I rode a 5'7" quad with straps last week in Maui, which seemed fine - there was plenty of wind for the smaller sized board. But I feel like I'd be in trouble with that size out here. And I'd like to get a strapless setup going - I was thinking about a 5'10" / 11" ish quad. Sizing help for SF spots would be great... or does it all depend on the board, kite size, etc.

I'm 6', 175 pounds with 7m, 8m, 9m, 11m SBs, brown eyes, and a dark complexion. I'm a Gemini and like long walks on the beach.

My 2 cents, for what it's worth:
I'm 6' and 165lbs (prob closer to 180 with a wet 5/4 wetsuit and booties). I'm riding a 2010 5'10" F-One surfboard (thruster). It's not terribly floaty and I wouldn't ride anything longer. I find bigger/floatier boards too buoyant, making it hard to really lean it over and get the rail sunk for a serious turn.
I regularly ride Dillon, Stinson, Ocean Beach, Waddell, Pismo and other coastal spots. I've also ridden that board in the Bay and at Sherman.
I've also ridden a 5'8" board at the coast. That size works well for waves into head-high and a half (i.e. 1.5x overhead). After that it's nice to have a bit more board, thus the 5'10". Still for my size/weight I wouldn't go any bigger than that. I rode a 5'11" Slingshot Tyrant this spring for a while and found it too big/thick/floaty to really crank into a meaty turn with my height/weight.
I seriously recommend riding anything before you buy. I've ridden boards which look great on paper and in the shop, but ride like they have the parking brake on or you can't get them to turn or stay upwind. That's a drag when there are good waves to ride and you can't get back upwind to 'em!

I'm 175 lbs and ride a 5'6" Hellfire. I love it. Also have a 5'10" and it's good too. Just not as quick. I find that the Hellfire and a 7m are perfect on the coast.

What were the final reviews on the Libtechs, specifically the Bowl?
