kiting in the clifton court forebay?

Post by dpca10 » Wed Aug 20, 2008 1:37 pm

Is swimming or kiting allowed in the clifton court forebay. I have googled all over but can't find any info either way. Maybe someone here knows some details. If so I have all the info on launch points and some pics to share.

I fly out of Byron Airport and have never seen anyone (windsurfer, kiteboarder, ski boat, fishing boat) on the forebay. I believe it is off limits to general use as it feeds one of the canals that go to southern California. It'd definatley be a sick place to kite as the wind dumping over the hills between Livermore and Byron area is typically quite strong.

Here's some non-kite banter about using the forebay:

Already tried...no go [-X . The fence is too high and it is guarded like a prison. I was approached by an official just for lookin through the fence.

Shuttles available upwind from Pittsburg and Sherman all summer. Come see what kiting west has to offer.

If you drive up the byron highway a bit more and head down Clifton Ct road you can drive right out on the west side of the forebay.

I think it's no water contact allowed

I think you can fish it and you can hunt it.

Just can't windsurf there nor kiteboard there. Too bad, since it blows as hard as the delta. There's no flood to contend with.

What I want to know is...anybody crazy enough to kite Bethany?

How about Del Valle, Shadow Cliffs or Contra Loma? Lagoon Valley?

Sherman's got the better quality wind for sure, but if you're into sampling other spots?

I've been up to Bethany, but the launch (boat ramp) is lined with tall trees. The north end has power lines all over the place and it's kind of small. I would try again if we had a few extras for launching/landing help. I think it would take a little bit more of a north wind too but it would be fun.

I kited Betheny Reservoir on Tuesday, I'll post a quick review but as far as I know i'm the first. Was going to keep it a secret, but it's such a quircky spot not much need as I don't think it's really a great kite spot. Still, unique and kitable.

I used to windsurf Bethany all the time, long time since I've been there, but as I recall it was SUPER holey.....mega gusty. It would blow like stink, but you'd have big holes to go through. I think it's doable, but I'd think twice about jumping too much. Even the reach is pretty small, not much room for mistakes to the side......guys used to windsurf it at night on full moons just to limit the crowd factor. I don't think it could handle many kites at the same time.
