where to kite this weekend (7/27)

Post by ryanfauth » Thu Jul 26, 2007 4:22 pm

Hi - I'm from Delaware in Emeryville for the weekend for a wedding and wondering where everyone will be kiting tbis weekend. I've been kiting for 3 years, and spent 2months in Hawaii kiting - so I feel comfortable at the upwind ability required sites. I'm blocks away from the berkeley marina - so it would be great if that was kiteable. Thanks for any advice!

do you have an ikitesurf membership?

if so, keep an eye on berkeley, 3rd and Sherman . . .one, two or all 3 of those will blow.

Hi Ryan-

If you can check out the Big Air Wind Jam while you are here in the Bay area.

http://www.bigairwindjam.com/

Also did you bring all your kites from Delaware? It typically blows a little more here than out in Delaware...especially in Sherman (mid afternoon) and 3rd AVE. I used to ride my 16 a lot in Dewey Beach, Delaware...but in the Bay area I just can use my 16 it in Alameda -typical wind conditions off course-

www.ikitesurf.com is free - for 10 days- if you have never signed up before. Work very well for the Delaware and Ocean Beach, Md as well.

Hello, what's your opinion about Alameda this weekend? According to ikitesurf.com the wind is quite low. Can I trust this forecast?

Ryan,
If you want to kite close to your hotel, keep an eye on the Berkeley Marina wind sensor. If you are comfortable with onshore launches there are two decent places to launch. One is Point Emery, which is a small beach next to the frontage road. Talk to local kiters about launching there, etc. Also check out the info on this site under 'locations'. The other is behind the horse track, golden gate fields, which is accessed from Gilman - you might have to pay $4 to park. This place is good if its SW or WSW. I usually rig 13M. On high tide it's best to launch behind the sand dune to stay away from people and dogs near the beach. Give me a shout if you want to kite there because I will probably kite there tomorrow if it's blowing. Glenn 415-378-0415

Ryan,
I know glenn likes beer and I think you should take him a case for that info.

Shuttles available upwind from Pittsburg and Sherman all summer. Come see what kiting west has to offer.
