Sherman Island Parking

Seams to be a sour apple in the bunch??? Somebody is complaining about the parking situation??? This has been going on for years down here, and is only getting worse as more people learn this sport. Some ways to cure this problem is to have people out here for the day could park in the back parking lot to leave room for overnighters. I have seen plenty of parking in the line- up, but you have to get to the river a little earlier in the morning. Most of the parking is taken by noon on a windy day. Taking pictures and threatening Mina about the situation is not going to change the problem. If we could camp in the back lot I would have no problem giving a spot in the line-up. Some of us spend most of our spring and summer at island, so it would really suck if some cry baby who starts showing up in June goes and ruins it for everybody!!! Would not want to be you when we find out who the cry-baby is..

Yeah, less attention is always better. My windsurfing buds back-in-the-day used to joke that if you could get a spot to park at SI (in the original lot), you could find a spot anywhere on Earth-- concerts, ballgames, no problemo! Back then, we avoided the "jet-ski" beach like the plague. Eventually we started parking on the levee...

Then again, there are some people who are taking up a LOT of spaces. I'm a day tripper but know of one person who takes up four spots-- for what appears to be the whole summer! Not very considerate really.

As for the tattletales and the whiners: please CHILL-- we don't want to jeopardize the liberal policies we all enjoy there! I think last weekend's crowding has everybody on edge and we need to be respectful of one another on those days or it will cease to be the place we have known and loved for many seasons past.

(I'll be restrained in my comments here but the vibe last weekend was not what it should be IMHO. You know who you are. Why all the personal insecurities?)

Perhaps a stupid question, but if one bought a trailer to keep at Sherman, are the cops bad about checking for current registration if it is just parked there? Also what are the statisitics for theft of rv's that are parked there unoccupied? Do people from Oakland frequent Sherman? I am thinking if I did go in on a trailer I would want to pimp it out.

Don't know about registration, but I don't think theft is a problem. You still have to get it to sherman island, so I would recommend getting it registered. Some of the fishermen/boaters maybe suspect, but I stereotype everybody. Remember it's $6 a day to leave your trailer.

Windhorny, please forget about bringing a trailer to Sherman, even if you pimp it out. You are welcome to kite there and visit from Oakland but please think small and try to be a good guest, because that is what you are. Perhaps a 1 man tent on the edge of Ho Chi Mien would be acceptable.

Trailers brought to Sherman should be only for the duration of your actual stay and attended, not parked. No trailer-shares or storage.

God, I hope this doesn't turn into another argument about Dog PooPoo...

I have been sailing (now kiteing) on Shermen Island for over 20 years. I even met my now wife in this parking lot & are raising my 2 kids there every Summer.

Everyone should know, especially the ones that have only recently started to come to Rio, we could loose our access at any time, rideing or sailing or camping is by no means ever a "shure thing".

Over the years, as we gone from parking in the lot, to up on the levee, to now parking out trailer at "The Sign" and every year I think this might be the last year...

Let's not screw this up. Don't try a to find a way to fool the system and break the rules.

As stated, "Trailers brought to Sherman should be only for the duration of your actual stay and attended, not parked. No trailer-shares or storage."
This is so important to remember and stick too. If not we will all loose.

By the looks of it, it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured and possably dies and the big boys come in and shut the whole damb party down.

So lets all play nice, obay the rules, get along, try to have some fun and most of all, be safe.

But the point about taking up multiple spaces is a valid one. There is plenty of room around the picnic tables for hanging out; anyone with a camper who is monopolizing an extra space (or two) to set up a table and chairs needs to start thinking communally.

I would also point out that if only one or two new people each year decide it's a great idea to park campers there all week while they're home at work, in another year or two it won't be a question of "tattling", but rather the serfs (commuter kiters) rising up against the landed gentry (trailer owners) and blowing the lid off the situation.

More importantly, we all need to start thinking about finding new spots for kiting, because the growth curve on this sport is going to exceed the available space pretty damn soon.
