Ozone Instinct Update - Attention Bow Riders!

Post by Yoda » Thu Mar 30, 2006 11:32 pm

This is quoted from the mother ship:

Many of you have heard the rumors that Ozone is working on an inflatable water kite, and I wanted to pass on the latest information to all of you. The kite is a new style of design and will be available soon. Please read below for facts about this amazing new wing.

For over half a decade Ozone has been dedicated to creating the highest quality Power and Snowkites and we have pioneered new technology that has made the sport safer and easier to learn. There has been a massive demand for Ozone to bring their world renowned kite designs into the surf market, and this summer we proudly release our first dedicated water-kite, the Instinct.

From the beginning, our design was something different from every other Surf kite. Sure we tried all the other ideas people were starting to use, but every time we found other kites to be over engineered and complicated. For our own design we found that the simpler the kite was, the better it worked in every situation. In the end, what we have in the Instinct is what we would describe as a typical Ozone product ñ a bombproof wing that delivers all the power and performance in a user friendly package. Here is the run down of basic features and design ideas that were put into the Instinct.

ï Absolutely NO pulleys anywhere on this kite or bar >> This means the rider has direct feedback and feeling from the kite, as there is no-disconnection or friction between the kite and rider. Pulleys reduce the feel you get from a kite therefore making it harder for the rider to feel and control the kite instinctively.

ï No Bridling >> You connect your flying lines directly to the Instinct as with any standard water kite, the kite lines do not run through a bridling system. The 5th line is a support line used for trimming the kite and is connected directly to the center of the leading edge; note that it is not used as part of the safety system at all. Ö.In our testing we found that the bridling as found on other flat kite designs actually causes those kites to be able to invert when sheeted out aggressively even whilst riding. We learned this very early on and worked in a different direction to find a better solution for supporting and controlling the trim on the Instinct.

ï Anti-Invert System >> One of the challenges with flat kite designs is their tendency to invert once the kite has crashed onto the water and is lying on its back. We were aware of this fact from the start and pushed towards developing a kite that overcomes that issue. The solution is a simple idea that not only stops the invert but actually helps the rider when relaunching.

ï Depower Range >> The Instinct is a gust muncher with a massive wind range; and the short length of our chicken loop allows the rider to depower with ease instantly. The bar range from power to full depower is within arms reach and removes the need to have a push through safety as our standard Ozone safety is within the riders normal reach.

ï Balanced Bar Pressure >> The Instinct has the perfect balance, light enough for easy control while riding unhooked, yet not so light that you can no longer feel where the kite is. There is direct feel and input with the Instinct bar, for quick turns and solid feedback from the kite.

ï Lift >> Jumping on the Instinct feels like your flying! Intermediate riders will love how effortless it is to jump and experts will be in orbit with huge grins. The clean profile of the Instinct was built with high power aerodynamics in mind, and the huge sheeting range allows even beginners to harness this massive power safely.

ï Speed System >> Working in harmony with the bars sheeting range is the ability to be able to change the trim speed of the kite (much like on a Paraglider) without altering the neutral bar position. Unlike other kites our trim system actually sets the angle of attack and hence the trim-speed of the kite, by using a graduating trim ratio between the 2 power lines and the 5th support-trim line. What this means for the rider is the usable speed range is increased giving both low end power and high end control.

ï Instinct Bar Safety >> The safety system works by letting go of the bar or pushing away the bar to the stopper for total de-power. The bar when fully de-powered is still within arms reach even by tiny armed people. For beginners there is a leash attachment on the outer leader lines allowing the kite to flag out when the chicken-loop release is pulled. For more advanced riders there is a ring on the back of the chicken-loop for the suicide leash (included).

*Anti tangle mesh fitted over leading edge central strut to stop lines from getting caught on the bladder valves.

* Built in our factory with our highest quality and attention to detail, including the bladders.

Sizes to be released: 7, 9, 11, 13, 15m Colors: Black/white, Red/White, Blue/White

For 10 to 25 knots a rider of the following weight range should use the following size kite:

45-60kg 7m

60-70kg 9m

70-85 kg 11m

80-95kg 13m

95kg + 15m

To ride in more than 25 knots, itís best to step down one size.

Q: What about less than 10 knots?

A: That is where it gets tricky, as with all kites. The basic problem is that a wind of 5 knots has only º the power of a wind of 10 knots, so theoretically you need a kite that is 4 times the size. In reality that just doesnít work, instead taking a bigger board helps and so on. You can step up a size in the Instinct range and ride at the lower wind speeds.

In our comparison tests an 80kg rider with a 130 x 40 Twin Tip is starting to ride upwind with the 11m Instinct when an equivalent kiter is riding upwind with a 14-16m standard C-Kite inflatable yet the instinct rider does not need to change kite size until well into the high 20 knots range.

I was checking the Flexifoil forum and there is some good feedback from some kiters that have had a chance to fly the Instinct. The Instinct is already available in Europe. Check this link:

This link is a short vid with some good pics of the kites, control bar and some footy from a surf session... sorry the pic quality is poor.

No bridals and no pulleys is a good step. The only thing they forgot is one pump!!! Oh well there is always next year.

Keeping this thread alive. :yawinkle:

More good beta on Kiteforum - see pages 5-7 for the most current feedback.

One guy, who owns a new SSTD 8m (and a very happy TD customer), stated he was so impressed after a short flight with the new Instinct, that he was going to put his TD up for sale and order an Instinct 9m.

My demo kites are coming in a week+! I'm getting a 9m, 11m, and a 13m.
I'll be hitting up all the popular Nor Cal spots for demos. Ozone will also be attending the Kite Expo in Pismo. Stay Tuned!!!
