Using Liquid Force CPR bar with old f-one revolt

Post by ryggen » Thu Apr 09, 2015 3:34 pm

So I have a new bar, a 2015 Liquid Force CPR, that I am using with a new 10.5M kite. I also have an old 7M f-one revolt. I like this new bar a lot better so I was thinking that I could use it with the 7M too. The problem is that the old bar's inner lines are shorter to compensate for the bridals on the revolt, so I would have to add extensions to the new bar.

Does anyone have any experience of something like this? Is it safe to do?

thanks,
Andreas

The CPR bar comes in three sizes 45,50, & 55cm. If you're using a 10.5m (Envy?) it should be used with a 50cm bar for best results.
The 7m Revolt has been tuned to work best with a 45cm bar, but some people like a more responsive feel, so you may have to experiment. If your CPR bar is 50cm, you'll be able to use it, but it will make the 7m much more responsive (quicker reacting & turning).
In contrast, if your CPR bar is 45cm, it will work perfectly with the 7m, but it will make your 10.5 less responsive.
If the Revolt's bridle is set up for shorter front lines (inner lines), then the CPR bar will not work out of the box since its lines are of equal length. You'll have to either switch to shorter front lines or add extensions to the steering lines (outer lines) every time you use that bar, which can be a hassle. It can be done, but you'll have to calculate the correct length for the extensions to insure the kite flying characteristics are not compromised.
Since (I'm assuming) your CPR bar is 50cm and your 7m Revolt kite is best used with a 45cm bar that requires shorter front lines, I'd personally get another 45cm bar to be modified or designed specifically for the 7m if you want/need a new bar. The other option is to get an adjustable bar, like Naish's, that can adjust from 45-51cm and then add the correct extensions when needed. This will allow for a true one bar set-up to work well with both kites.

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't factoring in the bar size before. You are right, it is a 50cm bar I have.

Just get some extensions for the steering lines and you'll be fine.
Listing gear is bad, and you should feel bad.

In practice it's probably quite annoying to reconfigure the bar every time you use a specific oddball kite. The more realistic option would be to tune the rear lines (lengthen / shorten) and just keep them fixed on there to be compatible with a more universal bar setup (equal length lined). I've had to do that with one of my kites that I got pre-owned that had been modified bridle-wise. But, be sure you're confident with your ability to modify bridles

Another option: There are always tons of small kites with light use consistently for sale so you could also try just finding something that is not so exotically configured (i.e. works with standard equal line length bars) to replace it with

As for F-One in general - does the Bandit 37 (have lost track of how many years they've been making that model) use an equal length lined bar? Le Noun do you know? It would sort of drive me nuts personally if they engineered design in to make the bars and kites less universally compatible across brands kite-to-bar-wise. Non-universal and/or bespoke components is soooo Euro, who do you think you are ... the Italians? KI*& SS$$

Ok, I will order some extensions then. I measured it today, looks like there's a 3 meter difference.

Another thing; I'm not all that happy with the under-the-bar de-power on the CPR bar. It's just really hard to get any leverage to pull when you are out on the water. So I saw somewhere on the web how you supposedly can mount a cleat above the bar and use it to adjust the power.

Anyone ever done this before?
