Saturday, my gear failed when my safety line snapped suddenly. (it was pretty old) I had to release the kite, and later got help from a couple people who I want to thank:
- Ken P, for towing me back to shore (it would have been a long swim)
- The guy who towed my board (I don't know who you are; it was a red surfboard)
- Jack for helping to spot my kite with binoculars
- The guy with the jetski who helped look for my kite (sorry I forgot your name)
Sunday morning, I got a call from someone who found my kite in Hayward! It had my number on it. The kite was mostly undamaged when I got it back.
Reminder to call the coast guard non-emergency number (415-399-3530) in cases like this. When I called them shortly after I returned to shore, they had already started receiving 911 calls from drivers. It saves them a lot of trouble to know they don't need to look for a body.

Good call on putting your number on your kite. How and where do you have it?
Listing gear is bad, and you should feel bad.

Yes, that was the secondary reason I shared: to get people to label their equipment. I wrote my number on the last panel, where it would show clearly (I.e. Not on black). I wrote email address on the opposite side.
