Re: Pismo Beach KiteXpo Updates: Biggest Expo Ever!
Ok, so the forecast is in question at the moment, but as we all know, these things often change. It could very well be great!
We're at the start of what looks to be a good season, in the last week I've had many sessions, at Berkeley, OB, and Dillon and gotten some epic kiting in. But, take a moment to consider what the organizers and vendors have put in to this event and their effort and cost. They do it to promote their business interest, but it's done to provide you, the kiting community with a chance to view, discuss, and hopefully test the latest and greatest gear around.
I appreciate what they're doing and will go to support them. Sunday looks good and Fri. and Sat. could quite possibly shape up as well. My first a few years ago to the Pismo Expo trip was great - no wind, but awesome times hanging on the beach and evenings with friends, which is priceless.
But, to keep it positive, we'll have a long season ahead of us. If you need a guaranteed forecast, this weekend may not be it, but we'll have plenty of those too. I just hope we don't have a chancy forecast for July 4 Sherman one of these days, to work hard for and plan an event for the community and friends and then to have no one show up would be, well, kind of a bummer.
So, give it another day or two and let's see what the forecast shows... :P

Re: Pismo Beach KiteXpo Updates: Biggest Expo Ever!
hi guys,
We typically use a combo of Noaa, the nuclear power plant weather guy (surfer, pretty darn accurate) and local knowledge to forecast. Weather still looking great so far:
WINDS:
A pattern of gusty north to northeasterly (offshore) winds
developing during the morning hours, shifting and increasing out
of the northwest to fresh to strong (19-31 mph) levels
during the afternoon hours will continue through Wednesday
morning.
An upper-level trough will pass our area on Wednesday which
will produce sustained strong to gale force (25-38 mph)
northwesterly (onshore) winds on Wednesday afternoon through
Thursday night.
Gentle to moderate (8-18 mph) north to northwesterly winds
are forecast on Friday through Saturday morning.
Moderate to fresh (13-24 mph) northwesterly winds are expected
on Saturday afternoon, further increasing to strong to gale force
levels on Sunday and Monday.

Hoping for good wind, I have attended the Xpo for the last 4 years and always had a good time wind or not.
Hopefully the wind comes up, as Pismo is a great beach!

Ollie, well said. Marina puts an enourmous amount of work into organizing these events, and the exhibitors put considerable time and money into attending them, including offering up some really great prizes for the raffle.
As we all know, uncertainty is just part of the nature of the sport, and as Ollie mentioned there is a lot more to what we do than just the actual riding. The Bay is going to blow for the next 6 months, so you are certainly not giving up a hell of a lot by missing one weekend here......and besides, I think the forecast looks promising. I hope to see you all there!

I'LL BE THERE FO SHO'!!
Pismo is such a killer place! When the wind is blowing it is INSAIN FUN!! One year the winds turned south and I had hours of kiting in the waves on my strong side (goofy), SO MUCH FUN!! But the bottom line is you never know, if less people show because the forcast is iffy, that means MORE FUN for US that do show when the wind kicks in... If the forcast were for NUKING winds, half the folks would be worried to try out new stuff, or if the forcast was for super-clean solid winds EVERYBODY would be there standing in line to check out the latest and GREATEST new GEAR!!
Life's a crap shoot- but if you don't play you'll never WIN!
Whatever you do, HAVE FUN doing it!

Not downplaying the effort involved in putting these great events together.
I'm just looking at the cardinal rule: Don't leave wind to find wind.
Maybe it should read "Don't leave wind to find wind unless there's a party there" :)

This is my fourth year going and I have never been skunked. I don't even mind getting skunked because I will be with my friends having a blast. I will also see a lot people that I know who I don't see regularly. I will get over 150 days of kiting this year so I don't mind missing few days this weekend being down in Pismo for all the fun.

Sunday looks like it could be good. Any hope for Fri, Sat?
