Awesome feedback from you'all, much appreciated.
to MoreWavesPlease point I did not realize you could get a decent winter suit for less then $200.
The reason why I was initially thinking about just supplementing my suit with a top rather than buying a new one, is that despite the short sleeves my current suit is a 4/3 and is quite warm. I therefore thought I didn't need much more to be comfortable.
To adamrod point, I do also think a hoody would help a lot in preventing the cold water going down my neck. I think this is probably the largest contributing factor in my feeling cold.
Once again thanks for the great feedback and the recommendations on good products. See you all out there soon

Re: Wetsuit Top
the largest contributing factor to you feeling cold is the heat leaving from your head! didn't your mother tell you to wear a hat in the cold? (or is that only what mother's tell their kids in the midwest where I'm from?)
a hoodie will make a big difference.

Re: Wetsuit Top

With an underlayer / thermal top like on the threads above you can get tons of warmth and windchill protection.
Underlayer: Metalite 1.5mm with integrated hood (absolutely the way to go in terms of warmth and function).

Certainly on the pricey side, but with the double layer hood (that goes over the neck of your wetsuit) and the metalite material, which reflects the heat back to your skin, with maximum flexibility and warmth for the weight you can't go wrong.
Windchill protection / Windstopper / Breathable!
Check this one out - We just got those, and we have already tried our samples during the Gorge expo when we had riders on the water, photographers / video guys and demo guys in and out the water for hours:

Mystic Windstopper / Breathable
At the end of all the above you end up with almost the price of a high end wetsuit, but you have the layers and the flexibility to attack most temperature conditions!
We have all of the above in stock, as well as 500+ wetsuits (no kidding - we just finished our yearly inventory and we got more wetsuits than kiters in the Bay Area :-).... so come on by to try what is best for you. Our Marin location is open 7 days / week all year around.
