Pillar Point right by Mavericks is a great flat water spot, but the winter sessions are far and few and you need quite a flexible schedule to just drop everything and head to the coast! I'm looking for people to carpool with from San Jose so PM me if you are interested in joining me when there is wind over there.
Thanks,
May

There are two kite spots in Bodega, the bay and the harbor. The bay is ocean (like Waddel, Stinson, etc.), the harbor is flat and needs +2' tide (I think) to kite.
I hit the bay last winter once, but there are lot's of talk about sharks. I don't know how seriously to take this or if it would be any more risky than Waddel. Anyone have any theories?

Im in the Coast Guard and we aren't allowed to do hoist training with the helos in bodega bay because of the shark population in that area. During fleet week i saw a (12' approx) White shark at ocean beach from 150' ft.I hit the bay last winter once, but there are lot's of talk about sharks. sharks
I would take the shark factor seriously. The area where we kite is called the "Red Triangle" for a reason. Ever noticed all the dead seals on the beach @ waddell??
Remember, you are entering the food chain when entering the ocean. You are not the fastest swimmer and you don't have the biggest teeth.

Re: sharks
I have a 12' stock class paddleboard (yellow Joe Bark by Surftech) which I paddle from Miramar where I live out to Maverick's and Ross's Cove when there is no wind and no surf and 'I just have to get in the water'. This weekend was just such a regrettable windless and waveless opportunity. I was so far outside at Maverick's and so far outside in 'the bay' dangling my arms and toes for so long ... that at one point I got myself a bit spooked and kind of had second thoughts about the wisdom of it all (namely choosing to spend so much voluntary time in the water without wind and waves or even either). well I survived again. wonder what those great whites think of my big yellow ?zgur wrote:I would take the shark factor seriously. Ok, I'm watching these Shark Shield videos, but I'm not sure I buy it. If a shark goes into feeding mode and moves to strike, I think it's pretty dead set on what it's gonna hit. These videos show sharks being repelled when they are just cruising with no target in mind. Show me a video of sharks coming in on a seal dummy for a hit and getting repelled and then I'll believe it.
