Little Baja Sherman Island is closed, Stay away

Post by Tony Soprano » Sat May 21, 2016 11:04 am

Sherman kiters:

Little Baja is effectively closed for the next year do to the levee construction. Please don't kite in the construction zone. Use the alternate area nearby or use the main park.

Little Baja is Closed - Access Launches Available

Due to construction Little Baja will not be available to us this year; however, RVWA SIKO is creating a kite launch in addition to the windsurf launch at The Access. The kite launch will be approximately 100' downwind of the historic windsurfing launch. A larger porta potty has been installed at The Access to serve as a changing room in addition to the other units.

The road and parking to The Access has also changed to accommodate construction. One will now stay on the main road paved levee road all the way to the launch and then turn left on the gravel road towards the marina. Shortly after that turn one will take another left turn on a road that goes down to the toe of the levee and that general area is the parking lot.

Please avoid and respect all construction sites- if we are a nuisance then the State will simply disallow our use outside of the County Park. Do we all want to be jammed in Sherman Island Park- I think not.

If you need to make an emergency water exit we ask that you use The Access launches or go down to The Sign- areas in between are in the construction zone and off limits. We recognize this could be a haul but to avoid the dangers of the construction site this is a must.

RVWA SIKO is negotiating with the State to secure a larger and enhanced Little Baja kite launch after construction. Please don't mess up this opportunity by not following the rules- they're for everyone's safety.

Thanks!

Mike

The purpose of the project is to build new facilities to release fish that have been salvaged from the State’s John E. Skinner Delta Fish Protective Facility and the federal Tracy Fish Salvage Facility back into the Delta.
The overall goal of the project is to reduce predation of salvaged fish at the fish release sites and increase salvaged fish survival rates.

I recently did some investigating and have confirmed that someone better tip off Mike that their Sandbaggin' event scheduled for this weekend is "not following the rules" and considered an illegal event without the appropriate permitting.

Any future modifications for use of the launch sites will require authorization from Reclamation District 341, the issuance of an encroachment permit from the Central Valley Flood Protection Board and concurrent approval from the US Army Corp of Engineers.

This includes modifying the water side of the levee too. Any changes or additions to the levee and riprap is in direct violation without authorization and permits.

Some have claimed that the sandbags have been approved by the DWR. This is pure b.s. as there's no such thing as DWR approved sandbags!!! Any sandbags placed in an area that impacts sensitive plants can also be in violation. Note that the DWR had to get permits for their project because of the sensitive plants that were confirmed along this levee.

If RVWA-SIKO is negotiating with the State to secure a larger spot in the future, then why on earth would they jeopardize their relationship by sponsoring such an event that is deemed illegal without permits. I was planning to help out, but now I will not be associated with any illegal activities (and thus a nuisance) that could jeopardize my kiting at Sherman Isle.

I don't condone illegal behavior but I'm pretty confident that will be the least offensive illegal activity going on in contra costa county this weekend
