ALAMEDA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE CHARGED ELLA COLEMAN, 24, OF OAKLAND WITH MURDER OF EMERYVILLE BUSINESS OWNER ROYCE V. VAUGHN - On December 21, 2015, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Ella Coleman, 24, of Oakland with the murder of Emeryville business owner Royce V. Vaughn, who died May 29, 2015. The Oakland Police Department initially arrested Coleman on August 25, 2015 on an unrelated robbery charge, and Coleman later admitted to driving over Vaughn in an interview with Oakland Police investigators.
BACKGROUND: On Friday, May 29, 2015, just after 11:00 PM, while in the 800 block of 28th Street, Vaughn was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. When OPD officers arrived on scene, they found him on the street, unresponsive. Medical personnel pronounced him deceased.
