Can you tell me where you found the front foot pad? Searched everywhere online and have not been able to locate anything like what you have on your board. Thx.

The guy in the video (comet69), myself and a couple of others I've seen riding this board are just using two tail pads. We're just putting the front pad on backwards or upside down. I like this set-up because the raised tail bar doubles as a catch for your front foot when doing airs or if you slip forward on the deck. The only other front pad set-ups I've seen are homemade or prefab'ed traction from NSI or Dakine has a longboard traction pad that I've seen used too (upside down) for the front foot...

This works quite well on a regular surfboard that I picked up cheap on craigslist.

That's what it looked like, wasn't sure, thanks for confirming. Was planning on doing the same thing but cutting off the heel rise, but now I won't do that

I'm nervous about the front pad placement. Think I will wax first, ride it a bit, see where my foot wants to be and then strip the wax off and put on the pad.

Don't let the outline of the board fool you into thinking that the Vanguard is another version of the Mutant,, it is whats underneath the board which is basically a huge concave which makes the Vanguard pretty special. I've been riding these as my surfboards for a while now and I refer to them as my cheat stick as I can get into waves easier and use the speed to get through sections faster but still be able to slip my foot back and complete a tight turn. I couldn't wait to try out the kite version when it came out and loved it from day one. I think Yoda nailed it with his review the smoothness through the chop is incredible and the stability is amazing, but also I can hack a turn on the wave face without turning the kite and in the air it just feels awesome. I used to ride a Firewire 6'4" Flexfire and loved it as well but the other day when I swapped boards with a friend and found myself on a Hellfire I felt like I was standing on a log the difference was so profound! I put a kick pad on the front to prevent myself from doing the splits to much when landing as I find wax wears out pretty quickly, and when kiting at OB the continual chop hops are relentless. I just got a regular kickpad but I know dakine makes a pad which is slightly wider for fish shapes.

Anyway if you have the chance try one out they are pretty fun and thats what it is all about!

Hey Mark, I am going to have to borrow your Vanguard the next time I see you at Dillon or Sherman. It looks like all kinds of fun :)

Hi there,

I've been riding a 5'4" vanguard (kite version) for a couple months now in a wide range of conditions from knee high to well overhead waves from 6m wind conditions to light wind (12 m) and I must say the board has handled everything excellently. After riding the 5'4", I could definitely ride a 5'2" or shorter on the high wind days. I chose the 5'4" because I often ride bigger than head high waves and wanted a little more board.

+1 to Yoda's review as the board is smooth and planes in a snap. Super fun down the line and fast and loose for those lip smacks and hacks. I am currently riding it as a quad which is working great for me. Yes, check out the bottom of the board as it is not your typical ride. Will follow up once I start landing some frontside and backside airs. Definitely worth a demo if you get a chance.

How is the durability of the vanguard? I heard that it is somewhat fragile around the rails.

I've been beating the crap out of mine at Waddell for several months and the rails and the rest of the board are still perfect. No durability issues.
