is land kiteboarding worth it if you already kitesurf?

Post by amlerner » Fri Sep 21, 2012 1:38 pm

I went straight from trainer kite to the water, so I never tried land kiteboarding. I'm moving next year so I'll be 2.5 hours from kitesurfing.

Is it worth it to landboard, or is it a step back from kitesurfing? How fun is it in comparison?

I've read the debate on a landkiting forum. Some suggest land injuries are worse but less often fatal. Though I've crashed hard at speed from great heights and the water sure feels hard, I'm much more worried about crashing on the land.

Others say that you can landkite in less wind. But as I understand it, with the right gear you can kite in super low wind. Maybe my money is better spent on a huge kite or a race board to make marginal days in the water more fun?

Looking for opinions from folks that have done or currently do both.

Blah, stupid iPhone app deleting my post, but here's the summarized re-post:

I've got a landboard I don't really use that you could borrow for a day or two and see if it's your kind of thing before investing in a whole setup.

It all depends on the location you can kite at. Inland with a small park and lots of wind shadows is not fun. That is why I travel to the water every chance I get. It is great for consistent wind. Chris has a good setup for going on pavement with a Carveboard and trainer. I used a friend's kite land board for a while. It was fun when the conditions were good but yes, not landing a jump on short cut grass is definitely less forgiving than on water. Unfortunately you can't go landboarding at OB anymore because of the snowy plovers and ranger enforcer. (What good is a thread without the mention of OB?) The sand isn't much more forgiving.
There are a bunch of landboarders on powerkiteforum.com if you want to find out more. CarlTB in the UK has some good instructional video. He uses Peter Lynn Arcs which are great for gusty inland conditions and landboarding.

I dont use mountain boards with straps. Just carve the parking lots on my longboards and carveboards.
