Hi, posting for a friend in San Jose who want to kite.
Since another friend recently was quite unhappy with her lesson I'm also interested in the quality of the instructions.

If they really want to learn, make the trip up to Sherman Island where it's warmer and the wind is more consistent. See Nat at Edge Kiteboarding (775) 721-1132.

good stuff at coyote point and 3rd. here's what i know:
Coyote:
- boardsports: got me going when i learned. good experience
- NorCal Sufshop: was super helpful to me when i was shopping for gear and i heard good stuff about their teaching

- Kite415: Ovi's a great guy and i hear good things
- Helm: also a good option
give 'em all a ring and shop around.
