Another newb from the valley

Post by deeprecon1 » Tue Aug 28, 2012 9:54 am

Newb to the whole kiteboard thing. However I do have a lot of hours flying a hang glider. Im only relating this because weather plays a major factor in both sports.

Im 44yrs old in good shape and all my joints are in working order. I have very limited time on a wake board, I was able to get up first pull and maybe have a couple hours of goofing off in the delta. TRACY ca.

I understand the learning curve ... is it practical to start ground school with Fall around the corner or wait for spring? I live in Modesto ca and have the ability to take weekday lessons which seem to be the best ( more one on one ) with the instructor.

Is it the case to use and abuse the schools equipment during the learning process, then start buying your gear as you progress. Again sorry trying to relate to Hang Gliding learning process.

Look forward to learning what looks like another great solo sport.

Where and who would you all suggest I take lessons from ?

Your hang gliding experience is probably way more helpful than any wakeboard, snowboard, surf, etc. experience a lot of us come into this sport with. It has already given you respect for the wind that is so necessary. Kiteboarding is mostly about the kite and it's all about it in the beginning.

Sherman island is your prime destination for this time of year and because it's close to the valley. Get a lesson or two there and then a few downwinders while the season is still going (the good spots stay on as late as November). If you get two lessons and maybe two assisted downwinders, you'll be ready for trickier locations in the season's close out or right when the season opens up again next March-April.

Good luck and welcome!

Oh, and just to be clear— Sherman is not a beginner location and no place for a beginner unless it's with assistance from a downwinder or kite lesson.

Definately do it!!! Call Nat at Edge Kiteboarding at Sherman Island (775) 721-1132 and get a series of lessons and then some assisted downwinders. You will accomplish two things, get totally hooked and have all winter to get frothed up and ready to go in the Spring, and give yourself a kick start should you be able to steal away to Baja this winter.

Get in now and you'll have all winter to hunt for good deals on buying some equipment, and at least a little idea of what you like. 2013's are just starting to come out so 2012/11 gear will start getting reduced and people will be selling off quality used stuff for a fraction of the price.

What jwest said. It's all about the kite.

Highly recommend a trainer since you can get out and do it safely just about anywhere.

A friend I helped get into kiteboarding has progressed so quickly I can hardly believe it. He spent many hours on a trainer before ever taking a lesson (which you should obviously do)
