Sketchy board on craigslist

Post by josha » Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:21 am

Hey all,
A while back, I lost my Dragon 05 M at Alameda. Yesterday, this posting turned up on craigslist ( http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/spo/247186071.html )

"An identical model to the one I'm selling is being auctioned on ebay for $489. You can have mine for only $200 obo, or trade for kayak or mountain bike. Pick up in Alameda. I can send pics and info, but the listing on ebay (search on North kiteboard) is informative and has a nice photo."

It doesn't look like the person selling this is a kiter (or has any clue about the board). My name and number was on my board, along with a "reward if found," and I'm wondering if anyone has any idea how to figure out if this might be my board.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Maybe ask (or have a friend ask so your name doesn't scare them off?) for some pictures, ask for detailed shots of the bottom or something to assess condition?

Ask to see it in person?

check http://www.kiteforum.com/phpbb/viewtopi ... ht=salvage

You may want to research lost and found rights/laws, and how they may be impacted by maritime law.

If you find that it is your board, hopefully the guy believes in Karma and is willing to work something out.

Good luck!

If it is not too far of a drive you should bring a friend check it out in person. It is seems by the craigslist ad that he knows nothing about the board, looked it up on ebay and now believes he hit the jackpot. Maybe he will send pictures but maybe he will just copy some from the internet. If you go to look at the board and it is yours maybe you can get it back if you offer him a finders fee.

F that, if I saw my board I would either show up with the cops or a posse of angry surfers! Because even if the guy who ended up with it didnt know, he probably knows who he got it from that took iot. And realistically , who woulkd have bought a board and sold it that quickly, meaning most likely it is the guy who took it!

If Josha left it on the beach and someone took it I totally agree with you. But if he was some dude walking down the beach and found it after it Josha lost it on the water you probably couldn't claim it was stolen. But selling it instead of turning into the shack or posting a found item ad is a pretty dicky thing to do so..... Is there a posse of angry surfers available.

every board has a serial number on it. Where did you buy it?

Josh did lose his board while riding, so the guy probably did find it on the beach. But I know Josh put his name AND number on the board in sharpie so...? Stealing...? Maybe?

I'm with Yuri... freaking posse in the bushes man! ;) Ha ha, then we find out it's actually some super hot girl who is selling it and then Josh winds up buying the board for $200 with his name on it! Ha, ha

Good luck detective Josh!

Man, if the thief was a hot chick that would be a tuff one. Haven't encountered that one yet.

Thanks for all the great ideas, both online and via pm! A friend of mine emailed, pretending to be interested, and asked for pictures plus a bit of info about the board. Someone here emailed her and found out that the person found it in a recycling area in her neighborhood (sketchier :) ). Like I said, I don't know for 100% certain that it is my board, and since I didn't write down the serial number (hey, I know what I'm doing tonight!), I can't prove it for certain if my name and number's worn off. We'll see what happens.

But I do have to say "thank you" to everyone, and it really is cool to see how much everyone in this community does watch everyone else's back. I really think that's one of the things that makes kiting so much fun. You guys all rock :)

I think there is a high probability this is either your board or this person took someone elses board unless there is a kiteboard recycling program I am unaware of. Does this board have any identifying characteristic like any nicks, scratches, different straps, pads, handle, or fins from stock. You could always go see the board and when there state it is you board and can prove it. You tell them you want it back or you are going to contact the police. If they took it from you or someone else you might bluff them into giving it to you. You might want to bring a friend.
