Well Folsom went off yesterday. It wasn't blowing as strong as we hoped, but it was strong and consistant enough to make for a great day. Most were out flying on 10m and bigger kites. I was out on my 9m Instinct, but I wish I had my 11m... I was slightly underpowered at times. One guy was flying a 7.5m foil (props to foil kiters on water!). In the afternoon when the winds got lighter, one guy pulled out and launched a 26m LEI. It was amazing to see such a range of size and type of kites in one day.
Dave with GK/Litewave was out demoing some 07 kites and boards. He said that yesterday was the most amount of kiters he had ever seen at Folsom. At one point there were about 8-10 kites up in the air. There were around 20 kites on the beach over all (mostly demo kites)... pretty cool for Folsom. I want to give props to the crew that made the trip from the bay area to session at Folsom. I'm glad the wind and conditions payed off! For many it was their first time kiting Folsom, including myself.
Dyke 8/Folsom Point is an awesome spot with a lot of potential for being a great kite spot when the wind is blowing from the north. The beach is quite rocky around the shore, but it has some sandy spots to launch from. It definately requires you to stay up-wind to be able to land back at the beach, but there's a cove that you can fly into if can't make it back. It can be a pain (or painfull - rocky landing) if you don't make it to the cove, so it's not the best spot for beginers, but it is do-able. I may recomend booties to save your feet.
Unfortunately yesterday looks to be have been THE day. The wind today is light (8-10). I'm hearing it may blow up to 15mph, but that was the forecasted peak. Big difference from yesterday! I would suggest that if your in the bay area to pass on this one... not worth the drive.
It was great to meet some of the Folsom locals and the few that ventured from far to come kite our local spot. I'm looking forward to more Folsom sessions soon! This time of year can be the magic time for this lake, so let's dominate it.

Nope, I left the house before I got the weather reply from yoda. drove all the way out there to see some guy scuba diving at the launch. Then drove back to sherman like an idiot. Man I've got it bad....... now I'm sitting here writing stupid crap on a kiteboarding site. Can somebody give me a number kiteboarding AA or a pill I can take?

Don't mean to "double post" but I want to make sure all kiters that plan on riding Folsom read this, as it's really quite serious and something to not be taken lightly...
Here goes:::
I want to personally let out a big shout to all that attended this past weeks festivities at Folsom.
I am confident everyone left with a smile on their face and good memories of 2 great days of great wind and water.
Though this will probably be the last of the 80 plus degrees, there is sure to be more great days to be had at the lake.
I would like to point out something my good friend Big Dave reminded me of,
Everyone needs to know that, though the past week was filled with nice smooth wind in the 18 - 22 mph range, warm wind and generally mellow conditions, during this coming season be where of very strong storm winds and super strong gusts and extremely cold water that Folsom tends to see during the fall, winter and spring.
As I am new to this sport and I certainly saw my share of new kiters this past week, everyone needs to know that, strong, gusty conditions are not for the light hearted and inexperienced kiter.
As I have been windsurfing Folsom for the past 13 years, I know how it can get and I can assure you that there will be many days that I will still opt to windsurf and forgo the kite for safety sake. Itís not uncommon to get 30 to 40 mph days with gusts topping 50 during the winter.
I (for one) know that is not the time for me to be out with a big kite in my hands. But with that said, I look forward to many more days at Folsom with all my new friendsÖ
Remember to be safe and understand just how dangerous this sport can be if not treated with total respect and judgementÖ..(all the time)
