Dude did just about everything wrong.
Listing gear is bad, and you should feel bad.

Just south of Royce is Crown Beach/Alameda. That's about it.

In my opinion, Ocean Beach is orders of magnitude sketchier than Crissy. Going into the water there carries a very real chance of finding yourself in a bad situation and drowning (2 kids just drowned there this week, and I have personally spent an uncomfortably long time in the rinse cycle).

Meanwhile at Crissy, if you are exercising decent judgement and not doing something like jibing in front of a container ship, when something goes wrong you might have a long swim or an embarrassing coast guard pickup but you aren't gonna die - as long as you don't get eaten by a shark, that is. Then you're fucked.
