self launch post at sherman access?

Post by opie » Wed Mar 30, 2016 7:29 pm

Hi All,

I know there is a convenient post on the beach, but is there anything in the grassy area? I used to

use a bag of rocks with a clip but it walked away a couple days ago.

Thanks,
Chris

I'm not sure of anything there but have never tried self-launching at Sherman. Seems like it would be hard in the grassy area with the turbulent wind and tall bushes. You'd have to toss the kite up pretty high in order to catch the wind, and even then you risk it back stalling and falling onto the roof of the picnic hut. You say you've done it so maybe it's not so bad, but I would think launching in the clean wind along the shore, especially when it's not crowded, is easier. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks, I tried the beach this morning, and it was much easier. Cleaner wind, just like you said.

Sherman must have been a lot of fun yesterday.

Yeah it was. It was really cranking from about 5pm on. Fun early season session!

I have done both, beach and rolling self launch on grass (so not using post). But it can be harsh on Kite and requires correct wind and kite position on land. Cloud ability to launch and turn from directly downwind helps a lot.
But I would better launch from beach any day.
