First time at Tahoe

Post by akhodakivskiy » Fri Feb 19, 2016 11:25 am

Hello,

I'm planning to check Tahoe this weekend and hit the snow for the first time. Could you please give the newbie some tips?

1. What is the most popular and accessible snow kiting location around Tahoe? Or does it depend on the forecast?
2. If I bring inflatable kites, sizes 7, 9, and 12, will that cover most of the conditions?
3. What kind of skis are best suited for snow-kiting?

And lastly, who's going snow kiting around Tahoe this weekend?

Thanks,

Anton

I'm not super in tune with the weather in Tahoe but I wouldn't expect much wind. For the most part think of snow kiting in Tahoe as something you do when the opportunity presents itself, always have backup activity plans.

Lower elevations such as Martis meadows were really bare until Thursday. Best bet is probably go high up like Mt Rose area.

Although maybe specific to their site, Sierra Snowkite Center usually posts weather/forecasts a few days in advance.

Resorts are pretty busy with ski week vacations and will probably remain so this weekend.

Yes!
3. What kind of skis are best suited for snow-kiting?
All-Mountain skis are best. 90-100mm under the foot. Higher sidecut radius like 18-20m. If it's deep, then powder skis are best. 110-120mm under the foot.

A few of us are going to go check out Tahoe Meadows today. Forecast looks good. We'll see if it holds true. The history looks promising.

Looks like the forecast has now been downgraded. Maybe tomorrow.
