What will you do for insurance? On a trip there before I booked a car through National I think for only $25/day or so, only to do some research before my trip and learn that my CC company, and most, doesn't cover Mexico for rental car insurance, then to find that adding their insurance had the car ending up at $300-$350 for the week.

Last year I found that rental cars rented with a Visa card DO include free coverage for the rental car itself:

Law still requires that you buy MEXICAN liabilty insurance to cover the potential damage to the other party.
Keep in mind though, that this Visa coverage is REIMBURSEMENT and in the unlikely event you need this coverage, You will need to pay the rental car company for any damage up to and including total loss/theft of the full value of the vehicle ($thousands$) before leaving the country as this reimbursement could take weeks.
Also keep in mind, depending on the rental car company, the VISA coverage may be much better than the mexican coverage they prefer you buy which often includes high deductibles. Also dealing with a US based rental car company may be easier in the event you need to talk to someone in fluent English.
A good thread describing this more:

Bottom line: don't "drive like you stole it", instead drive very carefully!

Sage advice indeed. I think it's also a matter of one's perception about where they are driving as well as local laws. This past summer I rented a car to drive from the Netherlands to the south of France and back and thought nothing about coverage, simply assuming I was good with my MC or Visa, but I'd be inclined to be more careful about correct coverage in Mexico...
