Wind at Ocean Beach

Post by elli » Sun Mar 08, 2009 2:24 am

Do you guys know of any way to get real time wind for OB? Ikite seems to be dead.

I found this:
http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... ?ID=MAS891

Is this one reliable?

I doubt that's reliable, its surely behind the dunes. For OB I use the sf buoy and the surfpulse.com webcam. When the bouy is over 20 from the WNW or NW and its not foggy its a good bet that OB is blowing. If you look at the webcam, you can be sure. If the cam is shaking, I assume its gusting over 25.

Greg you are talking different Es.

Endlestorm thanks for the tips. If you zoom in the map it shows the sensor on the east side of the highway.

Here is the answer to my question about forecasting OB, from Mike, one of the expert forecasting from Ikitesurf.
Maybe it could help.
Olivier

Having sailed OB in years past I know how hard is to judge the wind there. We have been looking for a sensor along OB. for several years. Without a sensor there is no way we can gradually improve a forecast since there is no feedback to learn from. If you see any home or business that has a clean shot a the wind let me know.

On spring days when there is no fog and both the Waddell and Bodega forecasts are for upper teens or stronger then Ocean Beach is almost certain to see similar wind. Anytime there is fog along the coast and the forecast is for early clearing and both Waddell and Bodega are forecast to have good wind then Ocean Beach has a decent chance if the satellite shows the fog burning back past the Golden Gate by noon. On summer days when Waddell has upper teens or stronger winds forecast but Bodega has only low or mid teens then Ocean Beach is not very likely to get much wind since the fog is unlikely to burn off along the coast until you get south of Año Nuevo. Hope this helps some
