I'm considering a job offer from Gilead (entry level Ph.D. Chemist). Gilead is that campus across the street from 3rd (picture kiteboarding at lunch). Anyone work there?

You're 5 mins away from kiting 3rd, some people I know would consider it a dream come true :).

better make sure you won't have meetings from 3:30-6 every day, or you'll be a very grumpy employee.

I have a friend who works 5 minutes from Waddell. He farms just up the canyon. I told him if my farm was there, I'd be out of business by now.
Ask Scott (Berrisbob) how many times he kited at Marina Bay this year (he works right across the street).

I work at 101 Lincoln Centre Drive (the 6 storey white building just a little past the lower beach at 3rd). I have to say it is awesome looking out my window each day to see how many people are out. Takes about 50 secs for me to drive to the upper launch car park

Yep, the water is literally 30 feet from my desk at Marina Bay. So... how many times have I kited there this year? Exactly 0. What a loser. I think that number would be much higher though if it were 3rd Ave and not Marina Bay.
Regardless, I don't think that proximity to a kiting spot is the best criterion for choosing a job, at least for most people. Check out the company. Get a feel for the culture. Determine if you will enjoy the work you would do there. If it fits, go for it. If not, keep looking, and relish the fact that pretty much regardless of where you work in the Bay Area, you're no more than 30 minutes or so away from a great kiting spot

Proximity for me means one thing: Get in to the car, or get there without a car. Once you are in the car, and everything is packed, 1 minute or 15 minutes drive is the same thing. No practical benefit. There is also the time to get into the water once you are in the parking, which you will not change and for me is longer than the drive.
IMO: Get the best job you can find, if you are talking biotech between South San Francisco and Palo Alto you are never really too far from third.
