So, I'm going down to Punta San Carlos in a few weeks. Going with a few other folks (some of whom have done the trip before), so I have a pretty solid idea of what I'm getting myself into. We'll be tent camping, no high-roller solosports stuff.

with that said, any suggestions? things to bring?

has anyone been down there this year? comments?

I'll have my underground, my skim and probably my surfboard . . .would it be worth it to invest in a dedicated wave board? I'm thinking I'll be fine...

adamrod - bro, you are going to "wave heaven". No matter if there is wind or no, there are very good waves at this location. You got the no wind option covered - surfboard. Unless you are a major league stud, a strapless surfobard is very challenging in real waves: people do it, but most of them are pro level athletes. The rest of us mortals use footstraps.

Underground - not much use in real waves, unless you want to play skater boy in waves, in which case just drive to OB......

Skim - not for the real side off wind you will be getting.

Best option - real wave directional board, 5"5 or larger. If you can't afford to buy 1 before your trip, I have a back up board, custom amundson, I may be willing to rent for your trip. email me at zeevgur123@ yahoo.com to discuss.

Adam, give me a call and I can tell you what to take and how to setup. Having the right camping items and settting up properly will be a big difference in comfort.

As far as Veev, last time i went to SC i sat for 5 days without any wind and 1/2' waves !!! 5 days... thank god I had lots of beer , propane fridge and an guitar.. I did eat lots of seafood.

Now don't get me wrong, after over 20 trips to SC that was the first skunk I ever got... I love SC and normally we get at least 1 15'+ day with 20mph every day after 11am.

I would hate to camp in a tent though, I prefer a truck with a shell.

On one low-wind day we started randomly digging for Tony's stash based on "who knows what" kind of rumors about where it was buried?! Hilarious dude.

Meanwhile, get ready to hunker down when you go to SC-- it's a pretty extreme place that everyone should try at least once. If you can't use a full-blown waveboard there then...


Rich, really? Twenty times? You are my hero.

Bring Plywood and bike boxes. Plywood to setup a wind break to hide your tent behind and bike boxes work wonders to fill the spaces between the car tires so that wind is not blowing uner the car into your camp. As long as you have a good wind block, your good to go.

As to the gear; you should bring a dedicated wave board. SC should be an easy place to learn to jibe on the outside and you really want that shape for the side-off conditions. Bring a 7m kite as well or you'll find yourself riding your twintip a lot.

Wow. thanks for all the responses, this is helping a lot. However, this thread is becoming a very expensive proposition. It sounds like in order to truly capitalize I should upgrade my gear!

I think I'm now covered in the board category, but I'm thinking hard about possibly upgrading my old 9m C to something with a bit more depower....

You'd be amazed how overpowered you can be even on a new 9M with lots of depower.

ha ha ouch. let's hope it's not THAT windy. not sure if I can justify picking up a 7m . . . unless it was a cheap 7m, but then that probably won't have that much more high end than a 9m sle
