So, I'm considering getting a cartop carrier. For those of you that use one, would you recommend it? Do you feel comfortable leaving your kite gear in it and don't worry about someone breaking in and stealing everything? any caveats?

Dude, then people will think you are not a local and give you shit, or they will think you are married with lots of kids in which case you should just go out and get a minivan. In short, a cartop carrier could screw up your sex life.

hmm. good point. perhaps we should ask the women on the forum if they would be turned off by a kiter guy with a car top carrier.
i'd make sure it was a super sweet car top carrier, all tricked out you know. maybe put a racing stripe on there for the ladies.

Ummm, if it's to carry stuff why would it be a turn off? I mean if you had the minivan, I think that's worse...
Why don't you get some plastic bins and keep your kite stuff in there, easy to cart and carry and then just throw your boards on top. We have two bins and keep our kites in a bag and just cart in and go. We leave the bins on our deck which has a rail to dry the wetsuits...

I have the Yakima Space Cadet. It has quick release connections to the load bars, which means you can take it off when you're not using it much. Use mine for road trips and it doubles the carrying capacity of the small 2-dr Honda Civic. I can put a couple of kites in there, with wetsuit and other beach gear, and have a kiteboard and surfboard next to it on top. It has a lock, which will definitely slow down a thief, just don't think of it as Ft Knox. Only caveat is that it can get hot in the black box in the sun.

Well hey, if Jessie thinks its hot to have a toprack, then I am getting stacked! Let me ask the woman. Oh wait we live at the beach.

well, the reason i was thinking of getting one was that currently I cram everything into my trunk so I can park it at work and not worry about my car getting broken into. I was thinking it might be handy to pack the cartop carrier with all my gear and then when I want to kite, just attach the carrier and go. and still have it look like my car is empty.
and with Jessie's seal of approval, how can I go wrong?

Adam, would it be one that you could lift yourself? Kinda sounds like a pain bringing that honkin thing in and out everyday. But if it had wheels on the back, you could roll it from the house to the car and then maybe take it off again and wheel it to the beach. maybe you could have a seperate compartment in there that you can fill with ice and beer.
