So I just moved to the area and am wondering what size kite would I typically fly when the wind picks up in the spring at sherman island. I weigh 180 to 190 lbs...basically what size will I be flying the most (9m...11m?).
thanks,
aisha

Depending on your skill (more experienced can go smaller, less experienced typically go bigger) you will be riding a 12m kite on the average day. The size/width of your board is also key in this.
I am bigger then you, #220 lbs, and I use a 12m 90% of the time.
Of course as they say "your milage may vary"
Good winds + waves, Zeev.

I would really recommend getting two kites. 2005 C kites are SO cheap right now. unless you gotta have a bow, invest in a 9m med aspect C to go along with your 12 and you'll be set for almost all wind.
Personally, I don't mind missing a session because it's blowing 10 knots, but if it's blowing 25 and I only had one kite, I would be pretty pissed. I'm 160lb and i've been pretty lit on my 9 most days I'm at sherman.

I'm 190 and spend most of my time on a 12 meter Vegas. I agree get a used 12 & 9 meter C kite and you will be set.I might have a '06 12 meter Vegas for sale soon if you are interested. "C=good bow=bad" Just my opinion.

Thanks for the info all. I am wondering why everyone is so down on the bow kite...I have not flown one but other people tell me they are the best thing since sliced bread. Thanks again.

Hillbilly,
I don't think you can generalize that everyone on this site is down on the bow kites. Many people ride them and love them. I think it's mostly a matter of personal taste. It's also a matter of conditions/location.
I have a 9m Waroo, and I love it for the waves (and I hope I will love it for the snow). Bows are also excellent choices for very gusty conditions or locations, and probably for those fairly new to the sport.
For the steady wind conditions you will find at Sherman, the majority of riders prefer C kites. I hate to ride my Waroo at Sherman. It just feels wrong there to me.
If I were you, I would try to hold off on getting anything until the new season starts in earnest. Many of the major kite mfgs put on demo days at Sherman and other Bay Area locations during the season, and you would be well-served to take advantage of that to ride many different brands and models and decide what you prefer.
