SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Coast Guard said that a 66-year-old windsurfer who was stranded for more than seven hours in the San Francisco Bay Saturday night was found alive and well early Sunday morning.

With the help of night vision goggles, Coast Guard helicopter found San Bruno resident Andre Volant in the bay near Monster Park at about 12:17 a.m. Sunday.

"He was a little dehydrated and other than that he was fine," Coast Guard operations controller Royce Heckendorn said.

Volant was airlifted to a Coast Guard station in San Francisco, where a relative picked him up.

"He's on his way home now," Heckendorn said.

Volant was windsurfing off of Coyote Point near San Mateo when the wind died down and stranded him in the bay, according to Coast Guard Lt. Amy Marrs. The Coast Guard began the search at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday

The Coast Guard used a helicopter, boats, and a land search team to look for the man. A California Highway Patrol helicopter also participated in the search, Marrs said.
