Boardbag as normal flight luggage?

Post by knyfe » Fri Apr 15, 2005 9:18 pm

Boys n girls,

how is your experience in flying with a kitebag? Do the airlines accept it as normal luggage or do I have to pay an extra fee like for surfboards?

My bag shorter and lighter than the bag size limit.

THNX for the info, K

for most airlines, the size limit is total dimensions (length + width + height). Most kiteboards don't fit into this size range.....

I flew last year with my kiteboard in a wakeboard bag and made it with no charges. One person tried to, but got distracted and then forgot... lucky me. I know people with very similiar bags who have, and others who have not been charged.
The safest bet is to get an NSI or Bestkiteboarding Golf bag. You could also check online to see what your airline has to say about snowboards or boogie boards. I flew this year with the NSI bag and got checked no problem. Just make sure the weight is under 50 lbs. no matter what bag you use.

If it's under 50 lbs you just have to be creative with what you tell them is inside. My favorite as of late is Skim board and beach shades...not lying and it's worked 3 for 3 in 2005.

You gotta keep on top of the descriptions though...they just keep adding them to the list.

Be creative...I look forward to checkin time...it is kind of a fun challenge to see what they will believe.

In 2004, I was 3 for 3 with the NSI bag and had no problems. The key is stay under the weight limit which means checking in a kite or two separetely in it's kitebag. I've also found that it helps to put your biggest kite in the NSI bag and then you can fit two of your smallest kites into the empty big kite bag and check that in.

i just tell them its a snowboard, REGARDLESS of where im going, has worked 3/3 as well, and each time i was heading to place that had no such notion of snow. 1. Maui in summer, 2. Cozumel, 3. Australia in THEIR summer.

each time i got a smirk like, "i know theres no snow there, but.. whatever", i think they just want you to lie to them so they dont feel obligated or responsible. One time coming back from cozumel the girl out of curiousity asked what i used a snowboard for, and i said "for riding on the sand" and she goes "OH! , thats what i thought"

I use the NSI golf bag because when I used a kiteboard bag I got dinged for $75 each time. The NSI bag was about $100 but works everytime now. Some people still ask but I just tell them they are golf clubs and no problem. They even seem to be more carefull with them because they realize they are expensive golf clubs.

The last couple times I've looked skis, water skis, snowboards are allowed. MY friend gave me a hyperlite bag, what is the deal with wakeboards? Last time I looked on southwest, they didn't seem to mention it.

I've used just a snowboard bag, told them its a snowboard(s) and nobody bothered with any further questions, even though I was going to Australia in summer.

Even if they were to ask more questions, its really none of their business why I would take a snowboard to a tropical or snowless destination. Perhaps I'm returning it to a friend who loaned it to me, or I might be considering changing my future travel plans to incorporate a snow trip, maybe I just love my snowboard....there are endless possible reasons to take a snowboard anywhere. The thing is they state that they allow snowboards, and they don't say that its dependent on seasons or destinations as fas as I have seen.

THNX for all your info. I am lucky that I can also use my snowboard bag for the kites and board.
